I am moving to OKC very soon.
I will be working in Downtown OKC and planning to live in downtown. I was wondering if living in Downtown is safe and comfortable!! Anyone here help me making a decision, living in Downtown or in suburbs. TIA |

Hi Jeff
The first place I would try would be Johnnie's Charcoal Broiler. Try the onion rings there too. |

The only drawback is there is no grocery store downtown. The closest grocery would be at 16th and Classen, I believe. |

A grocery store right in the middle of downtown or bricktown is in the immediate plans with a growing number of people living in the area. I have heard that there is around 10,000 people living in the area. If the pop gets any higher then I imagine many will start to complain about it. The Homeland near Mesta park/Midtown helps a lot. A natural food store is on N.Classen that can help, but it is still a decent drive going west. Its a pretty big store. I havent been there in a long time. Nutritional Food Center - Home

Something like Kamp's downtown would be great.

Ya...I think Kamps on Classen will eventually be taken over by OCU. It would be great if it changed locations to downtown and keep the name/history going. One of the Kamps brothers split and created Bill Kamps meat market. I never have visited the market. I hope its still open...I havent driven on Western looking for it in a while.

I used to go to Kamp's on Classen quite a bit. They had the best meat and seafood there.
Most people living downtown are single or married without children, so they aren't buying large quantities of groceries. A Kamp's size store that had the same upscale choices would be perfect downtown if there was a good location available. |

The Kamps we are talking about (Classen) has actually really changed. As you probably know there is less of an emphasis on the grocery section and more on the coffee/sandwich joint that compliments the nice array of salads ect. They also have a flower shop. I remember the old kamps with the brothers constantly helping the regulars shop when it was a real grocery store that was very busy. It had the best meat and pasteries in town. The old pickle barrel/the diorama of the brothers at work in the store ect. Currently the best place to find the meat and fish is probably Crescent Market or Bill Kamps meat market.
