The media tries to inflame the situation in my opinion of racism in California. The media has a hot streak of glorifying death and teenage girls being kidnapped in the first place. How many times did I see CNN talk about the black girl being killed in harbor city by latino gangmembers? Alot. Yes there's a big problem with Latino illegal immigrants taking african american jobs, a huge one. There's a problem with gangs along racial lines and racism, major problem. But moost African Americans and Latinos are very friendly toward one another, and don't sponsor ill will toward the other. It's amazing to see how immigration has transformed predominantly black neighborhoods into large Latino populations. In the 1960's in Watts, the section of L.A. was 98% black, and today it's 60% Latino.

DOH! We stand corrected. Will everyone please take their posts back. Did you mean to say, "To be INtolerant of a race..."
Can a person be prejudiced without being racist?

2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.
prej·u·dice ˈprɛdʒədɪs [prej-uh-dis] noun, verb, -diced, -dic·ing.
–noun

2. any preconceived opinion or feeling, either favorable or unfavorable.
3. unreasonable feelings, opinions, or attitudes, esp. of a hostile nature, regarding a racial, religious, or national group.
4. such attitudes considered collectively: The war against prejudice is never-ending.
5. damage or injury; detriment: a law that operated to the prejudice of the majority.
–verb (used with object)
6. to affect with a prejudice, either favorable or unfavorable: His honesty and sincerity prejudiced us in his favor.
—Idiom
7. without prejudice, Law. without dismissing, damaging, or otherwise affecting a legal interest or demand.

Thanks, RB, I was confused by that post myself. I think the definitions are interchangeable, but what do I know.
On the other hand, I can see a difference between racism/prejudice and discrimination. One is thought, the other is action.

Prejudice---not liking someone, general prejudice against people is like me....I don't like anybody very much.
discrimination---knowing the difference between a Highland Scotch and and Isle of Isley Scotch or the difference between prime and choice beef.

When I lived in Tulsa and drove a school bus for a living I was accused of REVERSE discrimination. Apparently I fussed at the white kids to much (I am caucasian) and not the black kids. Well that was because it was a magnet school bus and the black kids knew they would go back to McClain if they acted up...the white kids didn't care, they were from farther south and better schools.
Locally, Eufaula and Checotah are terribly racist (in my opinion) but worst is judging people by what they look like. If you go to Wal-Mart in your "hang around the house clothes" you are treated like a thug. Unless you are dressed in business casual or better, they look at you like you are a thief. ESPECIALLY if you are a person of color. They will announce, "Roll security cameras in Mens Clothing please!" when you walk into the department. I had my friend's daughters (teenagers from OKC) living with me for the summer a few years ago. They didn't understand why I asked them to look good to go to Wal-Mart. After they saw how some of the people there acted, they understood. It was so embarressing. My neighbors were rude to them. Of course, they were young but they didn't play loud music or party or drink..... they just were around. By the end of the summer the neighbors were ok with them but still. It was hard for them to deal with coming from OKC to small town Checotah.

I have lived in Oklahoma all but 7 years of my life, the seven were in Michigan, close to Detroit, I was a truck driver for 7 years and spent alot of time in other states. The racism here in Oklahoma does run strong in certain areas, but it is a different kind of racism then you find in other places, mostly here if you mind your own business and stay out of the areas that are plagued with gangster act'n fools, and the areas that they call their territory after dark... then your alright, for example, if you go to the OKC Zoo, don't hang around on that side of town when your done,...lol It is terrible to have to say that, but it IS true around OKC, east side is a terrible place to be broke down if your white and its close to dark, and south side is becoming the same way. I live in Midwest City and they don't care if your black white, latino, asian, it don't matter, if your in the wrong spot at the right time, they(thugs) will nab whatever you got in the parking lot of Wal-mart. But let me clarify something so that your not getting the wrong idea, white people are not just racist towards other races and black people are not just racist towards other races, they are becoming racists towards each other, our own races. I guess I got off track here....to answer your question, it depends on your attitude and where you choose to live. If you go into the 'hood' acting like your better than someone, then yeah, your gonna get treated pretty rough, and vise~versa. Choose carefully when you move here, if you do as to where you live, just be wise when putting your child in school, i.e. you wouldn't want to really put your kid in Roosevelt or Capitol Hill if he's actually a PC North type of kid....those of you from around here know exactly what I am talking about..
