Californians, at least around SoCal, are much more racists in general than folks in Oklahoma. They dwell on that topic, and gay issues. Also, Californians don't realize there is a country 100 miles east of the Pacific.

Sorry if this is a repeat; I'm new to the forum and don't know the post went to you the first time. Thanks.
Hello: I have been researching Nowata and saw your forum entry. I am interested in a woman who lived in Denver from 1904 to her death in 1942. For some time I have been looking for a Cherokee speaker and wondered if you could help. My subject says that she bought property in "Nowater" OK. Wikipedia (not my favorite source for information) says there is a Cherokee translation of the name that means something like "no more water". Also, the name she uses is Nucassee which she says means Narcissus in her native language. I believe that N'iquasee is the name of a Cherokee Middle Village. Is there a Cherokee word for the Narcissus flower and is it Nucassee? Could you help me in any way regarding this woman's origin? There are also some phrases she uses that are unusual in English. If you can help I'll send these separately. Thank you very much. If necessary I could drive to Nowata to look for more info about her.
Jeff in Denver, CO

Nucassee - does it mean narcissus, like the flower?
Would someone whose first language is Cherokee likely say "Nowater" for Nowata or is that a common mistake made by many?
Would someone whose first language is Cherokee use the term "pass" to mean the passage of time? For example "my father was pass 20 years old when he married" or "the boy was pass 5 months old when he moved".
Thanks for any help. JL

levyjmd, I can't speak the Cherokee language but I have found some information that might be helpful to you... I sent you a "Direct Message" let me know if you receive it.

Among other things I found some information about a "Nucassee Sun Bow Wootton" who was older than the Lady you speak of, but she was also in Denver, CO.

Narcissus is a character in Greek mythology. Although there is probably a Cherokee name for the same flower, I don't know it, and it is, most likely, a regional name.

No, and No.

No. Not any more than any other non-English speaker. The tense characteristics in English can be difficult for many aliens. There are some, but very few, non-English as a first language, Cherokee alive today.
