I read a fair number of posts about this area on the Dallas forum. Seems it has become a weekend or vacation house area for many of DFW. It rarely comes up on the Oklahoma forum in my memory. Is its growth and popularity a pure DFW thing? It is pretty remote from Oklahoma cities so doubt it gets much play in Oklahoma?

I think it is a function of how much bigger and well monied DFW is. There are OKC and Tulsa people who go down there but it seems like the "vacation home" thing isn't as big a deal for the Oklahoma people. Also, Oklahoma city people tend to do their vacation homes at Lake Eufaula and Tenkiller because they are closer. Tulsa has Grand Lake as well. Pretty much everybody who has the money to do vacation homes from OKC does those places or get one in the mountains in NM or Colorado.

There are probably people in DFW who have a vacation home at Broken Bow AND Colorado.

Sounds right to me. We have had a place in the mountains of N NM for 55 years. Cool weather beats water every time and we were close to Texoma if we wanted water.

I am surprised at how many DFW folks are drawn to that part of OKlahoma but it is considered by some as the nearest place to hike in 'mountains'.

Yes, I go down there once in a blue moon in the summer time and it's probably 75% Texas tags in the rec and resort areas around the lake. I remember talking to a guy who has cabins for rent north of the lake up in the mountains and he says most of his clientele comes from Texas. There are some nice spots up in there and some pretty streams/Rivers (Upper Mountain Fork/Glover/Kiamichi.

My middle name is Houston, from my Dad's family name. Dad was from Tennessee and his parents lived in middle Tn just south of Nashville when I was growing up in Durant. Our summer vacation was a long drive to middle TN to see grandparents for a week. We drove right through Broken Bow to get there on US70. I had no idea what was just north of that area.

Growing up in Durant our national news came from DFW stations. It was very rare to hear Durant mentioned on the news in those days, in fact the only time I recall was when Oswald saws in the news. he had married in Durant it was a wedding mill in those days. Now we see ads on TV and big billboards advertising for the Casino. Durant has changed a lot but not even close to the changes I saw in Dallas now vs when we visited growing up in the 1950s visiting relatives in DFW. Got to admit I like living here. But SE Oklahoma is a bigger part of DFW these days by a wide margin.

Bryan COunty is the only Oklahoma County that is part of the DFW combined MSA. A lo of business connections between the areas now. Durant has benefited greatly from it I believe.

BB is like DFW's 3 hr away Colorado. DFW area or the whole north TX are is bland, nothing but fields and flat land. 3 hrs away you have trees, rivers, hills. Now with covid you cant even get in there. Its all booked.
