Several years ago there was an attempt to have a Whole Foods-type store in Edmond. Might have been at Danforth and Bryant?? It was owned by JB Pratt of Shawnee. I lived in far SE Oklahoma City and didn't get up that way very often, but I did go to the store a few times. You'd think that if that kind of store would succeed, it would happen in Edmond, but it didn't last.

I just Googled Pratts Grocery Shawnee and was directed to a Homeland website, so I guess there are no more Pratts stores.

I think you pretty much nailed it. I'm an Okie, and I love my state, but the liquor laws in Oklahoma leave a lot to be desired.

However, as far as shopping for groceries is concerned, I think the local farmer's markets will provide you with fantastic produce. You can also try the Oklahoma Coop at the address below.

Oklahoma Food Cooperative - Local Food, Local Farmers - Farmer's Market, Natural, organic, health, sustainable, locally grown, meat, vegetables, nuts, produce, bread

This website might give you the greatest opportunity to get fresh produce and a TON of other items to buy locally. The food and other products is only delivered once a month or so (I believe); you will have to plan ahead.

Good luck. And like Happytown says, give it some time and I believe things will be changing in OkC and the rest of the state.

Cheers

BTW, there is a Whole Foods Market (used to be wild oats) in Tulsa if you are into a 3 hour round trip. Considering gas prices I think searching out the local institutions in OkC (of which I'm sure there are a more than enough) I doubt if this option would be worth the cost.

Whole Foods Market : Stores : Tulsa

And for the OkC residents, I'm not trying to promote Tulsa just trying to provide information.

I knew there was a Wild Oats there and if I remember hearing correctly they were bought out by Whole Foods. Unfortunetly when I lived in homa I wasn't close enough to drive to Tulsa. I would just shop at Firelake grocery except when I needed food in the middle of the night then I would drive to Super Walmart in Shawnee.

I'm not sure not having liquor in supermarkets makes a difference. New Jersey doesn't allow any liquor (beer, wine, hard liquor) to be sold in supermarkets, and yet there are numerous high end supermarkets there. Even the mid-end (Shop Rite) supermarkets have gourmet sections, olive bars, imported cheeses, etc. The big high-end chains in NJ are Whole Foods and Wegman's. I do miss those kinds of supermarkets, but when you move to different sections of the country, you expect things to be different.

I am for changing our laws so that wine can be sold in grocery stores, and that Oklahoma wines can be easily sold in our liquor stores as well as grocery stores.

I don't drink wine, but I know there are wineries in Oklahoma that make good wine.

I want to keep our 3.2 beer though!

Why on earth would anyone want to keep that stuff? A few years ago, I was spending the night in OkC as part of my new job. Of course, I was staying at a hotel.

Whenever I'm on the road away from the family I always have a hard time sleeping so I went to the store and purchased a six pack of 3.2 beer.

Being accustomed to the stronger beer sold down here, the stuff tasted like water to me. I drank four of them that night, ate dinner, and then went to bed.

The next morning I woke up with a huge hangover that felt like I had been partying all night long. My eyes were beat red for hours and I felt like garbage the entire day.

No 3.2 beer!!! No 3.2 beer!!

Default tired of no grocery stores to choose from..

i was born and raised in Tulsa, lived 15 years in OKC.. but until i spent the last 3 years in Dallas I had no idea that grocery stores here were this pathetic.

I was happy to move home recently, but miss a handful of things, including a high-end grocery store like Market Street or Central Market.. heck I'd give anything for a Kroger's for goodness sake!

I also miss sushi.. after much trial and error the best i've found is at Okura's on north May..

Anyway I'd like to hear more information about the possibility of a good grocery store in the near future..

Kroger is one excellent store. They are one block from my house in Hurst, Texas. I really wish Okies would lobby for a Krogers up there. It's one of the best grocery stores around. One would do very well in OkC and I promise you that you wouldn't regret it. The prices are reasonable and the quality of food is excellent.

I completely agree with your comment about a Signature Kroger in okc, the reality is
we are stuck with lousy choices until we take it upon ourselves to move into the 21st
century and allow wine and beer in the mix at the local grocery store.
