Where are you coming from, and how long will you be "passing" through OKC? Are you staying for a couple of days, or literally passing through?

My wife and I have tried Cattlemen's Steakhouse, good history and decent steaks, but we love Metro Wine Bar and Bistro. The food is fantastic, service and wine selections are first rate. Irma's Burger Shack has some of the best burgers and onion rings anywhere.

I don't know if it can only be found in okc since all of Oklahoman food is the typical southern food. I can suggest a couple great places.
Jamil'ls Steakhouse. If you want a taste of old Oklahoma City. Its been in business since the 60s. The walls are filled with painted portraits of famous Oklahomans. Interesting appetizers from Lebenese tabbouleh to smoked barbeque bologna and cabbage rolls. Shrimp ,Ribeye steaks and of course chicken fried steak (one of the state meals). If you dine before 7pm they have early bird specials for $17.99, it includes all the appetizers. If you decide to go, ask for Kenyatta's table. He's been there over 3 years. Very friendly.
Iron Starr. If your willing to experience the unique taste of urban barbeque in okc. They have pork ribs, corn pudding, collard greens, corn bread, oven roasted sweet potatoes and many more. The sides are to die for. You can even order a vegetable dish where you choose a bunch of sides for your meal. Good stuff. The brisket is a bit on the dry side in my opinion. I'd go with the pork ribs.

West of Oklahoma City, in El Reno, you can get great onionburgers at Sid's, Johnnies, or Robert's.
East of Oklahoma City, in Shawnee, try Van's Pig Stand for BBQ. The pig sandwich there is a favorite, and the smoked turkey is great.

If you hurry, you can dine at Jamil's in Tulsa....it is the original and has been where it is since around 1945. Robert, the head waiter started work the first day it opened. Robert is fun....he has waited on a LOT of people....Elvis Presley, Jane Mansfield, Jerry Lewis, John Wayne, President GHW Bush. The food is excellent, the atmosphere is different, but the time is running short. The widening of I-44 is going to take it out. Last time I was there, Robert said they were looking for another location, and were going to re-open when they lose their building. I imagine it will be a nice new sparkling clean place when they re-open.......but it won't be the same. New is never what the original was, is it?
