It's really hard to "compare" one city to another. Every city has it's own flavor, it's own good and bad points. You can compare weather, or COL, or crime, or culture, environment, but no two cities are alike. OKC can't be like Phoenix because we have more humidity, and we are not as spread out, and our temps don't get that high. We have less humidity than Omaha, and less "green" . We're not as "citified" as DFW, and don't have the southern flavor that Memphis has. From what I've seen in OKC rock and heavy metal music is just as common as country, and baseball caps way outnumber cowboy hats.

If you're thinking of moving to OKC, you made a good choice. (Sorry GP). Look at the city as a place that may have things to offer that would enhance your quality of life. But -- definitely make a trip here before you uproot yourself. Seeing is believing.

You're going to get people moving in here, I know it sucks, i watched my little hometown of Las Vegas become over run with follks from all 50 states in a dramatic way. It's just the reality of it.

Yeah, but if we tell them the truth......copperheads, tarantulas, scorpions, indians, hicks, cowboys, oilmen, and all the rest of the riffraff of a backwards society, perhaps they will think twice before leaving a community where they know the problems and have developed a comfort level about it. I know a guy who could never live in Oklahoma........he has a hard time sleeping without police and ambulance sirens in the back ground. I encouraged him to stay put. Having people ask him to go to church every time he turned around would have been more than he could take.

Just to be sure, I wasn't likening OKC to Phoenix. What I said was OKC is going to be the next Phoenix in terms of rapid growth.

Goodpasture, I really hope your posts are based on sarcasm. One of our biggest enemies are naysayers, and how are we supposed to transform Oklahoma into a desirable place for people to live when we have mouthy negative nellies holding up a sign that reads "Don't Come Here" on one side and "Move Elsewhere" on the other side?

North Texas is full of the same exact attributes, yet people are flocking there as if the rest of America is closing its doors for business.

I also think we need to lay off this "buckle of the bible belt God fearing population" mentality. It's pathetic and grossly over-exaggerated. I can't keep up with the count on giant churches all over Houston, along with Texas-based televangelists that live lavish lifestyles. Yet Texas newbies don't seem to have a problem with it.

Very seldom have I EVER had people in Oklahoma asking me to go to church every time I turn around. And if they did, so the hell what? Does it SERIOUSLY kill you to say no, or that they even ask? When did this become an Us vs. Them issue? Some people in Oklahoma pay WAY too much attention to bad news, and misery certainly loves company. If you don't want to dig in and help Oklahoma grow, stay out of our way.

Why are we supposed to "transform" anything? What are we supposed to transform to? AFAIC we are already a pretty desirable place for people to live. So, frankly, I have no intention of transforming anything, and I will try to minimize the number of lightweights that try to come here and change things to meet their idea of what a state should be like..........

MAPS III, Core to Shore, continuing Oklahoma City's revitalization, attracting better retail, cleaning up bad neighborhoods. Are you telling me these things don't need to be happening?

You aren't talking revitalization, you are talking gentrification........and I am not always happy about it.

Mom2My3 is on a distinguished road
We loved to Memphis from Tulsa OK almost 2 years ago. We live in a suburb, which is a really nice community. Memphis is a horrible city for so many reasons and we are looking to move before it starts moving into the suburban areas. I would say you will be better off if you move to OKC. It is a little older city than Tulsa and not as pretty. OKC is getting better and better though. They have the Bricktown area not far from the OKC Bombing Memorial. It is a neat place with many restaurants and arts. Compared to TN - Oklahoma is a little more simple. Most of the schools are city run and not county....so you can get things answered a lot quicker. Shelby County schools has a lot of red tape and it takes forever to have needs met.
All of our family lives in OK and it is a nice, slower paced, full-of-cowboys state. That is why OSU calls themselves the Cowboys!!! You will be fine and not miss anything about Memphis. OKC has everything they have here - with the exception of Elvis and some of the Blues music. They have culture, arts, music, and all. The governent is less corrupt and you do not have the horrible race issues there. Simple. GO!!!!!!
