Default OU Health Sciences Center commute

I am about to start med school at OU in the fall and will be moving to the OKC area. I am looking to buy a home for less than $100K in a safe neighborhood, with as short of a commute as possible. Any suggestions as to where to move? I also would like to avoid traffic. I have been thinking about the area around Penn Square mall and Integris/Baptist hospital around the NW Expressway, or maybe Warr Acres. I'd like to be able to avoid I-40 and I-35. I have also thought about the area around Sooner Rd. and 240, and maybe Midwest City. Edmond's probably out because of the price, and Norman because of the commute. Any suggestions?

why dont you chose to live in the southside of oks (240) i live there a go to norman a lot there is nice places over here to live for what your looking for in a price rang .. as for nw around penn i dont like it there at all i think that it is a high crime areas from what i hear in the new everyday. and not only that but that is a long drive from norman as is midewest city if your looking for a short drive..i would go with southside of okc and moore for a short drive to ou..I not sure if you have been here but all in all i would go with moore or norman.Oklahoma has cheap housing you would could find a home for that rang in all these cities.I35 is hard to aviod since it is the road to ou so i dont know how you are gonna do that..unless you move in norman..norman is a safe place to live since it is a college town lots of police. if you have anymore question i be happy to help.. i moved here from virginia 4 years ago...

Sorry, I should have said that the OU med school is by the capitol in OKC and not with the rest of the school in Norman. That's why I was thinking of NW OKC. I wish I could live in Norman, but it's too far to drive every morning.

You could look at Moore. I think the east side of Moore would work and you could go up Eastern to the HSC. Midwest City is fairly close but the neighboorhoods are spotty. Avoid Del City.

The area around Penn Square might be hard to get into the price range. The other problem with that area is that it is a slow go to the HSC from there even though it is not far away. If you can get something under 100K then I would do just that.

Congrats on getting into the school OU med is a lot better school than people give it credit for and the HSC is the fourth largest medical center (physical plant of associated medical facilities in the US I believe).

Hi ya'll! My husband has an uncle who lives in Moore. It's a suburb of OKC - as I'm sure you know - but they love it there and have lived there for years.
Most probably you can find a house in your price range in a nice area.

Good luck to you and congratulations!

oh man- i know this thread... Im an okc native that attended okc private high schools-then a bfa @ oklahoma city university- and now im living in norman getting my masters-MFA. If you are looking to buy a home near OU med center- THEN MY GOOD MAN- look across the street to the domed capitol and then look around at the neighborhoods- what do you see? A newly adorned capitol that rests among mansions and homes...all historic-called Lincoln Terrace. What else do you see? Maybe a little dirt/some grime left over from the bad years- What i am saying is buy buy buy! right now if i had the money i would buy the whole hood! its about to explode with development and of course they are keeping historic homes and mansions along with it. My aunt lives in a 500,000 home or like 650 but anyway- during a spell of financial weakness i lived in her back house(garage apt). Her home built in 1916 is breath taking- 12 ft ceilings/wood/charm. Her home is over 6000 sqft. The area needs a bit of cleaning which is coming from the city because the area wraps around the capitol complex. When i was living in the lincoln terrace/capitol/OU med grounds- it truly is greater than you ever imagined- my boyfriend and i would take walks around the whole neighborhood and capitol grounds and play frisbee on the grounds! We even had a house picked out along our walks- those homes large and small have character and heart with small beautiful parks(many trees in this area)-you can find one for around 100 gs and you might go up a bit once you investigate the area. These homes are jewels next to a revamped capitol area(you can see skyline...enormous architecture evrywhere you walk)-many doctors lawyers live here.

You mentioned the Penn Square mall area- My mother lives in Nichols Hills in a million home, this area might be a bit pricey- belle isle/crowne heights/edgemere park/mesta park you can find small historic homes in lovely tree lined streets and abundance of inner city parks.- super close-super fun-tons of culture-live in the core of the city not in the subs- revivals make money and happiness. cheers- hope you find what you are looking for.
