Default question on filing tax for couple living separately

as spouse lives in CA, when filing tax, May I choose Married file jointly for federal & file OK state tax separately? or the state filing status has to be the same as federal?

Any suggestion?

Thanks

in the state tax form,

How do I deal with the "Federal adjusted gross income"? as we filed jointly for "Federal", the AGI includes incomes from both states, it doesn't make sense to start with this number. Should I deduct my spouse's income out of it first?

thanks

You list your income and your spouses income (with W-2's) on the state. You apply only the taxes on income generated in the state.

I would suggest you either get a good tax software that will walk you through it (Turbo Tax does the "interview" thing), or go to a tax accountant to have your taxes prepared.
