$465 million expected for Oklahoma projects from stimulus plan
BY JULIE BISBEE
Published: January 30, 2009
Buzz up!

"The proposed stimulus package being discussed by Congress could include up to $465 million for Oklahoma projects, state Transportation Director Gary Ridley told members of a House transportation committee Thursday.

Oklahoma has a list of 130 projects ready for construction as soon as federal money becomes available.

One of those projects could include money for a light rail line between Tinker Air Force Base and Bricktown, Ridley said."

A waste of money. They can't even get reliable bus service in OKC. Everytime I come to OKC I see people waiting and waiting for the bus to show up. And why can't they at least build some covered bus stop shelters? I was down during the ice storm and I felt so sorry for those people standing out there waiting for busses that never came.

The 4 or 5 OKC residents that want this kind of stuff need to wake up. There are many, many other issues that OKC needs to address before they start work on this fluffy stuff.

If you're going to build the thing, wouldn't it be much more feasible to go from the airport to downtown? It would encourage people from out of state to visit bricktown because there wouldn't be any need to rent a car or take a taxi.

I would like that also, but it has to start somewhere. Tinker and surrounding area has a much larger pop that wants to visit Bricktown and the CBD. I am sure this will help develop other lines in the future.

"why can't they at least build some covered bus stop shelters"- There are many covered stops that have recently been built, but I would agree that the bus service sucks.

I would probably favor a line to Will Rogers over Tinker, as well [and don't forget that right next to the Arpt is the FAA's giant trng center, which would provide a lot of add'l ridership].

But I agree that other lines may well be developed, HT. Whichever line they do build first, it's important that it be successful, so that they can start up more lines in the future.
