how close are the oil wells to OKC living?
My husband and I are looking to relocate to OKC area, possibly Edmond, Yukon, or Mustang. My husband has said there are many oil wells in Oklahoma. Are they close to those areas I mentioned?
Also, any and all pros and cons living there? We are empty-nesters leaving the Chicagoland area (way overdo) to a friendlier, cost-of living friendly area. From everything I've read and researched, OKC is fitting the bill.
How bad is the weather, having come from Chicago, I'm a little concerned that the tornadoes are often???
Our weather in Chicago is not the greatest, so I'm hoping for better, milder winter, warmer summer weather.
We are also big swimming pool people, yet so many of the homes I have researched do not have pools??

Hi, and welcome to the forum, Emptynester52.
I moved from NJ to Mustang a little over a year ago. Here are my answers to your questions as a newbie:
The main oil well I see is the one in front of the State Capitol building near where I work (I work for the State of OK). In driving around the OKC metro, you'll see an oil well or two, but I don't think I've seen one in Mustang.
Our weather is wonderful! The summer is hotter than NJ, but not as humid (although the natives complain about the humidity); the winters are milder, with very little snow (this year anyway), but ice storms on occasion. Tornado season is in the spring, usually from March to June. This should not be a big concern of yours. Most houses have a storm shelter, but you can put one in for around $3,000 (we have one going in tomorrow). Most everyone here has a weather radio which you can set for your area. What usually happens is when severe weather is expected, your weather alarm will go off to warn of impending severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, etc. We usually then switch on the TV (if it's duirng the wee hours), and the TV stations can pretty much tell you exactly where tornadoes have been spotted. Then, Mustang (and all towns actually) will set off the siren if it looks like anything is near Mustang. After all this, you can go into the storm shelter, or -- do as we do and run outside to see what we can see. LOL BTW, one of my daughter's friends at Mustang HS told her Mustang never gets hit.
The house we bought has an above ground pool. We requested our Realtor to show us houses with pools, and there were quite a few actually. If the crowds at our local pool supply store is any indication, there are a lot of pools in Mustang!
Any other questions, just ask.
BTW, we are VERY happy with our move.

Nope not a con of any kind for OKC. If it weren't for my being able to see it now, I would think it was heaven.

Right, the that bill being fit is a minor one. It is so cheap to live there that they practically pay you to live there.

We have lots and lots of tornados. Most are little guys that just sort of dance around but there are only about 75 to 100 times a year we get a big enough one that you want to find a shelter.

Most people don't like pools, but we have a lot of custom pool builders and servicing companies.

There are oil wells around, as mentioned this is the lively hood of Oklahoma. Around Edmond where I live they are mostly out in the country, or atleast started out that way. The area is growing so fast it is starting to encompass the oil wells in the area.

How bad is the weather, having come from Chicago, I'm a little concerned that the tornadoes are often??? We have hot (100* ) summers and cold (below freezing) winters, we do get tornados and snow on occasion and ice most often. I wouldnt be too worried about the tornados though. They do happen but they weather men are pros and are always right on top of it. Even a bit overly excited sometimes.
Our weather in Chicago is not the greatest, so I'm hoping for better, milder winter, warmer summer weather.
We are also big swimming pool people, yet so many of the homes I have researched do not have pools?? I have noticed this as well, and not sure why. Perhaps most people dont want to deal with the upkeep. There are public pools and lakes close by.

thanks for the responses
Thanks to all who have responded. My husband seems to have a problem with the tornado issue. Why are all the houses built without basments. (which is my preference, not his)?

Don't listen to Goodpasture about Tornadoes. 75 to 100 times a year is an exaggeration. I think he's pulling your chain. The annual state average is 53.
It is recommended you get a storm shelter installed, or pinpoint the center part of your house. I'll give you the skinny on tornadoes that have hit OKC in the past. Bolded were violent tornadoes. Note that many parts of OKC have never been struck. The common paths seem to hang around far south OKC near Moore and Tinker AFB and northwest of Edmond. I'll give you the dates OKC has been struck since 1980. The number appended were the number of deaths. If there is not a number appended, the tornado did not cause any deaths.
February 10, 2009
May 7, 2008
March 31, 2008
November 10, 2004
May 8 and 9, 2003
October 22, 2000
May 3, 1999 - 36
October 4, 1998
June 13, 1998
October 7, 1992
May 2, 1991
March 13, 1990
March 28, 1988 - 1
October 2, 1986
September 29, 1986
May 8, 1986
June 3, 1981
March 23, 1980
And given that almost all of these tornadoes were weaklings that didn't last but 5 to 10 minutes and did not hit the urban areas of OKC, your husband can lay his fears to rest. Besides, OKC has the world's mist advanced warning systems.

The only F5 tornado to hit OKC in the last 119 years was on May 3, 1999. F4 tornadoes have occured in 1893, 1942, 1945, 1949, 1978 and 2003.
F4 and F5 are the strongest. F0 and F1 and the weakest, do little damage and are the most frequent tornadoes sighted in OKC.

Hope this helps!
