Moore OK
Good evening everyone!
My wife and I are looking to relocate to the OKC area and I think we have decided on the Moore area (close enough to commute to downtown for my wife and close to the aerospace industry for me). We have seen a lot of great houses and we are planning on coming down to look at a few next weekend. It seems like there are a lot of new or at least newer homes just east of I 35 but they are pretty close to a set of train tracks. I was curious if anyone from around the area could tell me how active these tracks are and if the trains are to use their horns through the town. The house that I seem to like the most is only about a quarter mile from them and I just want to know if it will be a huge issue or not.
Thanks alot in advance!

The train tracks are most likely for the BNSF rail. They run straight through Edmond as well and I have lived close to them on two different occasions. Once the house was about 20' from the tracks. They use thier horn all the way through town. Atleast in Edmond they did as there are streets crossing the track ever mile or so. Some conductors were nicer than others and would only toot thier horn, others would just lay on it all the way through. Eventually you get use to it and will hardly notice.
When I lived 20' from the tracks, about 3 each morning two trains would meet and one would pull onto the side track and stop. Once the other train passed the stopped train would start off again and the sound of the couplings slamming together make a heck of a noise as it moved down the track.
I lived there for a couple of years and it didnt bother me. My neighbors had kids and lived there for quite some time and like I said.. you get use to it. You will learn thier schedules..

Depending on how close the house is, the train can be quite loud. I don't live east of I-35, but I have a friend who owns a business close to the tracks. I am amazed by how loud and how often trains go through Moore. Maybe ask neighbors next to your potential house? Maybe the sound decreases by a lot after so many feet away from the tracks? Doubtful! I used to live about 1/2 mile away from other train tracks. It was still quite loud. But like prerunner said, you get use to it.

There are a couple housing developments farther east you may want to investigate. Besides the noise, those cars carry some nasty stuff. Should the unmentionable happen, you may not want to be near there.

This is not something I would want to get used to. However, to each his own. Don't know what you mean by working in the aerospace industry, but if you are referring to the FAA, you should take notice of all the construction they do, the duration of how long it takes, and the disruption of traffic because of it.

Those tracks are quite busy, even in the wee hours of the morning. I live about a mile from them and I can hear when the train crosses Sooner Rd. I'm not close enough for it to wake me up at night, but I can hear it. I looked at a few houses near 4th & Eastern and 19th & Eastern in Moore because they were a few thousand cheaper than other comparable neighborhoods and the train tracks are the reason why. I decided against moving there because the house we wanted was thisclose to the tracks and the thought of a train derailing scared the crap outta me.
