According to CNN this morning, Oklahoma City is THRIVING during this recession
Is this true? The Mayor stated that unemployment is dropping each month and the banks are doing very well and the quality of life is improving.
So is all this true???

The reason the banks are doing well is that they never got caught up in the subprime market to the extent that many other areas did.

That's all right........Tulsa's employment isn't dependent on government paychecks......they have real jobs. And Tulsa isn't becoming a quality place to live, its been that way for years.......

OkC is a government haven; with the FAA, Tinker AFB, and the State Capital. The city relies heavily on federal and state support; it is a beneficiary of subsidies from both the Feds and the state of Oklahoma. OkC is a great place, but it has been gifted with much capital at the expense of the rest of the state and the federal government. Just the facts folks.

I believe both cities are kicking ass, and I want this to keep happening. While it is true that OKC relies heavily on government jobs, high-paying private sector jobs has been outpacing the public sector since 2001.
Tulsa may want to consider pushing harder for public sector jobs. They don't pay as well as the private sector, but Tulsa really needs a cushion to weather the down times.
Right now, Oklahoma is making me proud. Unfortunately, I cannot get Oklahoma's success past Texas arrogance. I get the same response a lot from Texans when I brag about OKC and Tulsa... "it's easy to be successful when there are only 5 people and a few million head of cattle". Bite the big one, Texas.

Instead of Okies moving to CA due to hard economic times (eg., Great Depression), it will be the other way around this time...

Good points pulse. It must be a Houston thing. Here in the DFW area (perhaps because it's closer to the border) most of the Texans I run into really like Oklahoma and are happy with OkC's success. Most aren't as familiar with Tulsa as it's a little off the beaten path (not on I-40 or I-35).

The way that almost every thread in these forums becomes a pissing match between OKC and Tulsa is getting silly. It almost seems personal, like people are speaking as the said city. A psychology major would have a field day.
