What? Nobody in OK got time for this?
I was a little pumped when I found this forum, but ZERO posts?
I have kin in Oklahoma with whom I swap e-mails all the time, so I know you are out there.
I was born in Maud in 1940, family moved to Shawnee in late '41. I worked for Troy Smith at Troy's Panful of Chicken, Van's Pig Stand, and ReBob's Steakhouse. Before that, I sold the Oklahoma City Times on Main Street for Louis Shapiro. Gus at Marquis Furniture was one of my favorite customers. The "ladies" at the old Dixie Hotel used to tip me fifty cents to go pick up little brown bags for them at Mr. Reynolds Drug Store. That was a lot of money in 1948!
I attended Jeffferson Elementary School, Washington Elementary, Franklin Elementary, Shawnee Junior High and Shawnee High School.
Although we moved around (a LOT!) in the late 40's and early 50's, Shawnee has always been my "hometown".
Anybody out there?

I lived in Shawnee from 69 to 74. Loved the old downtown. I worked at Piggly Wiggly, Step Dad's Kerr McGee Gas Station, Reynold's Drug Store and the Zales Jewelers for a small bit of time as a kid. I left to go in the Navy and came home in 78 to go to OBU. Didn't go more than a year and went back in the Navy and finished a career. I now live in New Jersey. I used to live right next to the train tracks around Main and Kickapoo. My house is no longer there. The entire block was taken over for commerical purposes.

Your Funny!
How long did it take you to put that together? That was pretty good. Where do you live? Have any funny words for your area of domicile?

I had an Uncle Gus. But I'm sure it wasn't the same guy because he wasn't in the furniture business. Where was Marquis Furniture located? Don't remember it. But, that was 30 years ago for me.

Marquis Furniture was at 218 E. Main, across the street from Baptist Hardware. It's still there. The guy who bought it from my Father kept the name and has 3 other stores in OK. He change their names to Marquis.

As a Teen I used to work
At the Zales Jewelers, The drug store across the street, grocery store a couple blocks away (Humpty Foods), The Lumber Yard, A& W Drive Inn, The Kerr McGee gas station on Harrison, and a bid dept store off of Kickapoo by the access road (can't remember the name - Alexanders?). I was all over the place. Even bailed some hay in the summer.
I streaked across the parking lot of the grocery store on north Kickapoo near the A&W.
I loved my time in Shawnee.
