I saw this on the news in Phoenix. This doesn't suprise me. The police in Oklahoma and Texas are ridiculous. The last time I got a traffic ticket was in Oklahoma over 15 years ago and I got three in one year for the most petty infractions such as following too closely, having my fog lights on and crossing the median of a freeway on an empty Sunday morning when I missed my exit. First, the Dallas police officer pulls over the guy whose mother is dying and now the Oklahoma state trooper pulls over an ambulance because it didn't yield despite having a sick person in the back. This shows you how where their priorities are. Instead of settling this at the hospital, the state trooper got a chip on his shoulder and fought a paramedic on the scene. The Norman police gassed the crowd when fans stormed the field after they beat Nebraska; they won the national title that year.
Nonetheless, out of respect to the people here, I won't respond and will allow everyone to have the last word or response regarding this post. I won't argue with people and will respect peoples opinions of this post or me (good or bad). I want to post my opinion but I don't want to be inflammatory and make this thread a beacon that turns into 30 pages.

In what part of the country as a trooper NOT an a$$hole. How many beatings were there in LA, taped and untaped? Law enforcement in this entire country is overzealous.
As for your case, I agree on all but you crossing the median of an empty freeway. Empty or not, the freeway system was designed as it is for a reason. Miss your exit? Catch the next one. Don't cross the damn median. Seriously.
BTW, this thread belongs in the Oklahoma forum as the Ambulance isn't even an Oklahoma City ambulance. It looks rural and was quickly featured on the Ft. Smith, AR news not long after the incident happened. That is a good indication this was an eastern Oklahoma incident, a part of the state notorious for overzealous cops.

That's strange. I spent most of my life up to age 39 in Oklahoma. When I left I had a sizable stack of warning tickets for speeding, but I never was actually charged for speeding until I moved to Missouri. The cop who wrote the ticket said she clocked me at 72 in a 55. Then she returned from her car with a ticket for 73 in a 55. I was actually doing 62 in a 55. I don't expect that all cops in Missouri will lie to inflate charges just because this one did. My brush isn't that broad.
I have personally found cops in Oklahoma & Texas to be the most courteous I have met anywhere. I have found state troopers in those states to be exceptionally professional. I'll say the same for troopers in Arkansas & Missouri.
This video shows that the troopers "fought" the medic on the scene when he resisted arrest--whether he should have been arrested or not is for a judge or DA to decide. The video also shows that the troopers changed their minds and allowed the medic to continue his mission and presumably did settle the matter at the hospital. This was an emotionally charged situation, and the fact that the troopers allowed the medic to continue his mission did in fact show where their priorities were.
Your thread title does not reflect what the video shows. The video shows that the trooper placed his hand in a position to control the arrestee's airway after the arrestee resisted arrest--not because the ambulance failed to yield.
Everyone's whose mother is still alive has a mother who's dying. How the hell would a cop know whether the person they are pulling over has a mother who is dying or already dead, before the cop pulls them over? Is there some kind of special signal? Secret hand sign?
I don't remember the incident in the stadium. But I'm certain no one was "gassed" and I wonder if the cops involved were Norman cops because there are usually several agencies involved on game day and the University of Oklahoma has its own police department. Cops don't use "gas". Nowadays they use OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) pepper spray which is a derivative of hot cayenne peppers. It's food. Large crowds which trespass onto university property despite warnings against it, members of which display signs of imminent violence and property destruction, can only expect those handful of individuals charged with preventing it and maintaining a semblance of order to respond with an overdose of cayenne peppers.
Try to ignore azriverfan. He tends to start out seeming relatively reasonable, then gets weird and contentious. At least that's the way he comes across in the OK forum, from what I've seen.
This is just unnacceptable. To hell with what excuses OHP tries to make. They are suppose to be the premier law enforcement agency in OK. I could halfway expect this from one of the hee haw okey doke agencies like Spencer, Dibble, Gotebo or any other agency with Boss Hogg as the chief, but not OHP. Considering the amount of training they get compared to other agencies even including upper echelon departments like OKC or Tulsa.
Arent they all supposed to be on the same team? This guy obviously has a big head due to the shiney stuff on his chest. I hope the patient was ok.
Heck OHP might as well pull over a Firetruck for speeding to a fire if they are going to start pulling this crap. I am not condeming OHP as a whole because the actions of a few..
This guy should be fired and all other OHP officers (if any) should be punished due to not stopping the incident.
Without lights/siren an ambulance is just another vehicle on the road, bound by all the traffic laws, including yielding to emergency vehicles. Even WITH lights/sirens on we are not excluded from obeying all traffic laws, but the lights are a REQUEST for yielding by other vehicles to assist us in expediting our patient to the hospital. Unless a patient is critical/urgent we do not run our lights; most of us (on EMS here in my town) feel that the lights actually cause potential for unpredictable driving by other motorists!
I don't understand why the HiPo was so enraged; his behavior concerns me and I would like to see him receive a psych eval, possibly some time off - but not necessarily fired - pending results of his psych eval. I think he may need help managing his anger or maybe this behavior is a gross exception to a normally very placid guy, either way his behavior was inappropriate.
I don't understand why the EMS crew allowed the situation to escalate. Since they were not running "hot" I'll assume their patient was not in immediate danger of dying during the short delay of receiving a ticket. When pulled over I have found "killing them with politeness" really pays and would have done whatever it took to keep my patient from being stressed by the situation.
The tech in back thought the female passenger needed medical assistance (as per his statement.) But - by removing himself from the back of the ambulance he abandoned his patient - a huge mistake, one that could cost him his Paramedic license. I would have waited until the HiPo requested assistance and the EMT (driver) could have attended to the HiPo's patient if she indeed had needed medical attention.
In my opinion absolutely everything was done wrong by all professionals involved.

District Attorney Press ReleaseNews9.com
OKLAHOMA CITY -- The OHP Trooper involved in an altercation with a Creek Nation paramedic will not face criminal charges, Max Cook, the Creek County District Attorney, said.
>snip<
Cook said he made his decision based on dash camera video from the OHP vehicle and cell phone video of both incidents.
This trooper is obviously performing the modified Heimlich maneuver on this gentleman that is in acute distress. You can see from the picture that the paramedic is pointing up with his finger. This indicates to the Trooper that the obstruction in his trachea is much higher than normal. As everyone knows this calls for grabbing the patients trachea and applying a forceful upward motion to relieve the obstruction. This Trooper should be given a medal for saving this mans life.
