Red Lights at night in OKC and Metro
When you drive along 35 and later 235 from Norman all the way to Edmond, at night, there are hundreds of blinking red lights. I think in the Moore area they are WEST of 35 and in North OKC into Edmond they appear to be EAST of 235.
My guess has been something to do with the Military or with Energy/Gas/Oil. I have travelled widely and NEVER seen towers of this sort in such an abundance. I never get the kind of look I want because I am driving, but think they are spectacular. btw, some of the lights blink at intervals, and one night I saw a phenom. similar to vids I have seen of the famous 'Phoenix Lights' taken on the evening of March 13, 1997.
A little off topic, but the Wind Turbines SOUTH of i-40 near Weatherford are truly spectacular as well. From what I can tell, they are mind blowingly large. Again, I would love to see them better but I am driving.

hey there. all those blinking lights that are near edmond are the tv stations and radio stations broadcasting towers. i sometimes hear it called "antenna city". i think its kinda neat to see at night.
i found this site where they talk a little more about it. http://www.fybush.com/sites/2004/site-040129.html, and this page talks about the towers in moore.

I have seen those during the day actually. But they go on forever. I don't think I have seen another city with an 'Antenna City' like that.
I appreciate the article, and agree that they are neat to see (just wish I wasn't driving 70 while looking)

Darn it.
I thought they were locations of houses of ill repute.

And in addition, almost a dozon of those masts in northeast OKC near Edmond are more that 1,400 feet tall... or around the height of the Sears Tower in Chicago. It is (unverified) the largest collection in the United States.
There are two reasons why the antenna city exists. First, northeast OKC near Edmond is not in FAA air space, which is why most of the radio and TV stations set up shop on that side of town. Second, the height of the towers means a larger coverage area for Oklahoma City. Oklahoma City's coverage area includes arge swaths of western Oklahoma, northern Oklahoma, and portions of southeast Oklahoma.

Man I miss those, it's the little things i see like that that make me wanna come home. An old girlfriend and i lived on Boulevard and 33rd in Edmond, about 1-2 miles north of the towers. some nights we would just sit on our balcony sipping wine watching the red lights turn on and off.
Ha! somethin like that is only romantic in Oklahoma!
