"I have heard it is possible to live in Edmond and never know you are in Oklahoma."
Ouch! We're looking forward to the Oklahoma experience. Now I'm worried -- we were thinking of Edmond, but I don't want an uptight community of cookie cutter houses and people. We've decided to buy in January instead of leasing, so this is a more important decision than it was before. Where should we look for a smaller community, definitely "Okie", non-cookie cutter houses, fairly decent schools and "town" type of atmosphere? Oh, and my daughter would like to keep a horse in the back yard, but that's not a priority.

Yukon definitely has the "Okie" feel to it. Just be sure that's what you want before you move.

Lots of people love Edmond. It is just not as Okie as most of the state. I liked living in Harrah much better. It has a tiny downtown, good schools, a great community spirit, and I kept my horses in my backyard, and sometimes my front yard. Really helped with my lawn mowing chores.
It is all just in what you like. Everyone has different tastes. I always liked the Bethany area near Lake Overholser too.

Just be sure you want a small town Okie atmosphere if you're moving to Yukon. Because you will for sure get it.

Yukon has a big grain elevator, flour mill. It has a cool downtown with old buildings. It is a route 66 town with some funky old motels, etc. Yukon has the Okie feel to me because it is a town based on agriculture. Yukon has a lot of new housing developments but not overwhelming like Edmond.
I don't have anything against Edmond. I have lived there 3 different times! Just not my cup of tea with all the spas, shopping, upscale this and upscale that. Hardly any guys in Edmond wear overalls. Edmond is where all the newcomers to OKC seem to go.
Yesterday I had a near argument with my DIL. She LOVES Edmond. I want them to move to Seminole or at least Shawnee so they will be closer to me. She and my son think that would be so . Everyone has a different taste.

Peggy, I think after what I've read Edmond may not be the best choice for us. My family and I are definitely not the "upscale, spa, shopping" type. We hang out in jeans, t-shirts and boots here in NJ! My daughter's riding boots are so full of horse s*** she has to leave them on the front porch. DH wants me to check out some areas in OKC. It seems from what I've read that NW OKC might be our best bet. Comments, anyone?

Hmmmm. Maybe that's why I never felt like I "fit in" in Edmond. NW OKC is nice. I graduated from Putnam City. Yukon is good too. What type of riding does your daughter do? How do you keep your horse in NJ? Do you board or do you have your own land? You might look in the Jones area too.
