Right you are, Synopsis. I can't believe the changes OKC has made. The leaders with the support of the people really turned things around and attracted some good paying jobs to the area. Like Dell Computers. They built one building on the river, but they liked their workforce so much that they built more space and hired more people. As I understand it, it is like a technical support center for people who need help with their computers. I loved the headline in the newspaper when they announced the first building--"Dude! We're getting a Dell!"
Research has shown that people respond positively to the Okie accent. No way you don't know you are talking to an American if an Okie answers the phone. I think Tulsa has some similar operations. Doesn't Met Life have a call center?
These are not sales jobs but relatively well paid and provide employee benefits.
It's a lot different now. I remember when all the workers in McDonalds had grey hair.
The economy is more diversified now in OKC. They may lose one employer but you don't risk taking the whole town down. They have gone to great lengths to be business friendly, and that can be a good thing. Every job creates another job. Houses are going up as fast as they can build them around Edmond, where we still have some property. Still, I wouldn't call it a boom, just steady growth.
Building some cultural amenities that many people find important was just one step in the process. OKC could possibly get an NBA team in the Ford Center. Can you believe that? The mayor and some of the business people have been great. But the fans did a great job too. You have to show you can do what it takes.
Tulsa can do the same thing. But you need leaders that work together. The citizens have to support the ideas. It helps to improve race relations. Build on your good points. Not saying Tulsa does not, just my observations on what OKC did right.

Tulsa is trying to do the same thing. It's running well behind Oklahoma City because Tulsa leaders had more trouble with organizing the people to vote higher sales taxes upon themselves.

Is Guthrie a artsy town? I notice at least one art gallery
in the nice photos.

There are six of them listed in the phone book. I wish I could give you more information but that is all I know about them. Have never been to one.

I wish I was as smart as you and your "Rutgers" educated kido from BOSTON..
Thanks for moving away, myself and others appreciate it.

Don't feel sorry for me, I'm doing just fine.
Concerning your remark about how smart my Rutgers Educated Kido is - I bet you do.
We were certainly glad to accommodate "yourself and others". In reflection, we wish we would have accommodated ya'll sooner.
BTW, I noticed several pics taken around Guthrie. Nice pics. One thing I noticed about all of them was the lack of traffic and or parked cars on the street. Pic on 6-23 appear to have been taken about mid morning on Saturday. Another set of pics was taken on Monday, 7-2. These pics due not indicate a thriving local business community. I hope your city and business leaders can eventually get it together for the sake of Guthrie.

How did you miss the traffic and parked cars? They are in all of my photos.
I have no idea what you mean by a lack of a thriving local business community. My family and I have a great time shopping in Guthrie.

Guthrie is a tourist destination with bed and breakfast joints ect. many people walk around w/o the need for their cars to be parked directly infront of a store. Guthrie isnt a supermarket w/ people frantically running around to find antiques. OKC is up and coming....this will make Guthrie more and more attractive. A mass transit system for OKC is LONG overdue and plans show a link to Guthrie from Edmond. The link would not be high speed but more of a trolley like experience. I believe that Guthrie will really thrive with a mass transit system but I do want it to stay the same.....It will because of it being a historic district.

traffic and parking
I see several pics around Guthrie including one looking west down main street. This pic was taken mid to late morning on a Saturday. Appears that almost half of the parking spaces are available. Looks like 1 vehicle at the sig light facing east. None from the west. Saturday is THE premium business day of the week. Even people that may be walking around will park somewhere. There is simply not many cars in the downtown area from the pics.
Although I never intend to return, I hope Guthrie survives as more than a "day trip destination" or a bedroom community with a bunch of beautiful old buildings. I grew up in one of the beautiful old victorian homes there. I remember Guthrie as a thriving small city up until about the early 80's.
