cntrygirl is on a distinguished road
Hi Jessica,
Im from Marysville just north of Sacramento. It is so sad to see developers build housing tracks and buisinesses on some of the nations best soil for crops. I don't know about anybody els but, I would much rather look out at a field of corn or a pasture full of cows then look into my nieghbors house or the convenient store across the street. I wellcome a place with slow growth, the slower the better for me. Here in California its so fast pace that you always feel rushed even when you don't have anything to do. "YUK"

I was wondering why I had never been through Gerty, but I saw on the map that it is off 75. I'll have to take a look next time I'm down that way.

Things are heating up in southern Hughes County. Apparently there is a lot of interest in drilling for natural gas. It's gotten so bad that landmen are hanging out in the local cafes fishing for royalty owners. The drilling does make for a lot of employment, though, and business for the local stores.

There is something about this area that I think is so beautiful. I love the big old oaks. I even have names for some of the giants on our land. I enjoy watching the change of the seasons, and the wildlife. I guess I will just have to learn to use my camera so I can post some pics.

cntrygirl, I am sure you will be able to find employment with your work experience. The wages paid in OK are much lower than CA, but the cost of living is also low. I am not really sure what a cement terminal manager does, so I can't say much about that. Have you ever been to Oklahoma?

Cntrygirl, you might really like the Ada area. Ada has PBR events. Ada has East Central University, which might be of interest to you with a 16 year old daughter. We go to Ada quite a bit, since that seems to be the closest Home Depot, and my husband's doctor has his main office there. Ada has the area's largest hospital, and some pretty good restaurants.
Glad you enjoyed the pics peggy. I am actually one of those royalty owners in Southern Hughes County (100 acres split between the kids; we just own mineral rights and not the property itself) and was contacted to get my signature on some documents allowing them to drill on the land almost two years ago but either they haven't drilled on the property yet or haven't found anything because I haven't seen a dime of royalty money yet. Everyday I open up the mailbox I hope and pray that I'll see an envelope that says $$$$$ and that this will be the first installment of many to come!

Ada is actually growing very, very fast, at least business-wise. But don't worry countrgirl, it will NEVER, EVER be a Sacramento or even an OkC (well, maybe in about a thousand years). Also, this kind of growth is good because Ada needed a few more amenities since it's kind of a regional hub for a very large rural area.

There has been a phenomenal growth spurt there over the last 5 years, chiefly because of the Chickasaw Nation and the business and money they are bringing into the area. East Central was developing an entertainment/theater complex the last time I was there that took up half a city block, there are new restaurants and businesses coming in on a monthly basis, hotels, Valley View Regional Hospital has grown tremendously, new roads and improvements; Ada hasn't seen this kind of growth in probably 50 or 60 years. Jobs there are pretty plentiful as well. I even believe they are rerouting part of I-40 to come through, or very nearby Ada.

I also love the land in and around Hughes County. I grew up there and it is always going to be my home and I wish to move back there some day to retire. Gerty is about 10 miles South of Calvin, 2 miles West of Highway 75. It's tiny, about 95 people but there is even new growth happening around that area as well. I hope it doesn't grow too much though. I want it to stay pretty secluded, as it's off the beaten path entirely. A highway doesn't even run through it, just a paved road.

cntrygirl,

I used to live in Davis, so I know that area.

I lived in Fresno for a brief time, and the soil there was supposed to have been the most fertile anywhere. You could put your hand in the soil and it felt like flour, and I mean this literally, and yet they were tearing out orchards and building homes. I don't understand Amercia. Well, greed.

I lived in a cow pasture in Creston, CA. I mean this literally. I rented a house, and when I was painting my kitchen I had the door and windows open, and all the sudden I looked out and all of the cattle were standing in my front door staring in. I asked the owner to build a fence around my house so I could garden, but they would get in sometimes, so I asked for another barbed wire to be added. I loved it there. We moved, and when we went back to see the old farm house they had built homes on that 160 acres. The small town of 200 was becoming a track home area.

If we were younger we would still live in the country, and I would want to live in Locust Grove, OK. It is 30 minutes north of here. At our age I thought it best to move into town in case I ever need public transportation to grocery, doctors, etc.

Synoposis,

Now you have me wondering what Ada looks like and where it is located. I will go look on a map. I grew up in an area noted for oaks. el Paso de Robles-- Pass of the Oaks. Still I love the trees of east Oklahoma since I prefer much more variety, not that Paso or even Ada doesn't have them.

jessaka, Ada is in some rolling hills, but it's not as beautiful as Eastern Oklahoma. Although, in places, you wouldn't know the difference. There are some homes in and around Ada that are in some heavily forested areas that are just spectacular. Ada is a great town and all, but it's certainly won't be a "love at first sight" type of thing.

Synopsis, I have heard of Toots. Wish it was still open. Apparently, it was a pretty lively place.
