My husband, myself and our 16yr old daughter are ready for a change.
We currently reside in northern calif. where we have deffinitly had it with city life. We bought an 8 acre hobbie ranch 4 yrs ago and they are building track homes all around us.(putting the squeez on us country folk). I like what Ive been reading about the different areas in southeastern part of OK. We are into rodeo, sorting and gathering cattle, trail ridding and basically anything that has to do with horses and cows. Can anyone tell us where the best place to be looking for our possible furure ranch would be there in OK. |

From my neck of the woods in East Central Oklahoma, around Ada there is much of the type of land you're looking for. There is also a rodeo outside of the city that's been going on for years (Ken Lance Rodeo, the oldest rodeo in the state). You might google it. You're not too far from the beautiful mountains of Southeastern Oklahoma either. Land is pretty inexpensive out there; I know many people that have 40 and 80 acres on the rolling hills outside of Ada.

LOL just about anywhere in SE Oklahoma! I live in Hughes County which is east of Ada. Quite a bit of good pasture land around here. Further southeast the land gets more hilly and rocky, but there are many more public trails and more exciting riding. You can find some nice land in the valleys for pasture.
Will you be looking for employment? If so, you may want to stay around the larger towns. Here's a link for horse activities. Trail Riding Here's a link to a rodeo arena about 3 miles from my house. Rockin Redneck Arena. |

Hey, peggy. I grew up in the GIANT city of GERTY! We lived there for the first 12 years of my life until we moved to the big city (Allen).
I posted some pictures of Gerty in a thread earlier this year if you want to have a look.Gerty Photo Blog |

Isn't it just wonderful what California is doing with its land? At least here growth is very slow. What part of Northern California are you from?

Really enjoyed the pictures, Synopsis. Thank you for posting them. Gerty looks pretty good compared to Yeager! Gerty in your pictures reminds me of Lamar. I was wondering why I had never been through Gerty, but I saw on the map that it is off 75. I'll have to take a look next time I'm down that way.
Things are heating up in southern Hughes County. Apparently there is a lot of interest in drilling for natural gas. It's gotten so bad that landmen are hanging out in the local cafes fishing for royalty owners. The drilling does make for a lot of employment, though, and business for the local stores. There is something about this area that I think is so beautiful. I love the big old oaks. I even have names for some of the giants on our land. I enjoy watching the change of the seasons, and the wildlife. I guess I will just have to learn to use my camera so I can post some pics. cntrygirl, I am sure you will be able to find employment with your work experience. The wages paid in OK are much lower than CA, but the cost of living is also low. I am not really sure what a cement terminal manager does, so I can't say much about that. Have you ever been to Oklahoma? Cntrygirl, you might really like the Ada area. Ada has PBR events. Ada has East Central University, which might be of interest to you with a 16 year old daughter. We go to Ada quite a bit, since that seems to be the closest Home Depot, and my husband's doctor has his main office there. Ada has the area's largest hospital, and some pretty good restaurants.
