I never lived there, but the extreme western panhandle, around Kenton, is my favorite part of Oklaoma. Black lava flows and buttes, very 'western'! I actually came on the forum to see if there was anything about that area.

I drive through the panhandle every late September/October for my annual visit in Northern New Mexico. I think it is a beautiful neat place. It is amazing to see all that open range. I always stop at a particular gas station/whatever type of building on the route and there is all these ladies that sit around and do crafts and visit. I asked where do you live. Oh were neighbors about 20 miles between each house!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love the area.

I lived in Guymon 1977-1988 - My parents still live there so we go out there 2-3 times a year. Guymon is about 60 miles from boise city and when you're talking about the OK Panhandle, 60 miles is just a "hop, skip and a jump" ha!!!

It was a great place to grow up....with a real sense of "community". Some people said it was a "closed off" community, but that does not refer to the poeple...it refers to the fact that when you're that far away from everything (closest city-shopping is Amarillo 125 mi away) you know everyone - and you pretty much stay there for shopping or entertainment etc... - what you have in your community is what you have - no driving 20 min to the metro area to get something like I now do living in the Tulsa metro area.

boise City is very small - county seat, few businesses by not many - rural though they do have their own school (that's not always guaranteed in the OK Panhandle) The climate is wonderful out there. It will get hot during the day, but always cools down at night. We ran the a/c during the day, but by 8 pm it was off and windows were open even in August. You might be in sweltering heat during the afternoons, but a walk in the evening was very refreshing. I LOVE the climate there - as I'm now on the other side of the state (Tulsa) and it's very humid - a walk at 3 am would be miserable in August -

Are you considering a move there?
