Drive ins in California are almost a thing of the past, while Drive bys are the in thing. It was so nice to see a Sonic Drive in here.

Beautiful Catoosa! And lots of inland lakes, too.

One of the things that I am not liking about Oklahoma right now is the bugs and insects. Today I got stung by a scorpion. I have lived here my entire life, and I have never been stung by a scorpion until today. I have seen them during the hot summer months before, but this one was hiding, and I guess I accidentally touched it. It really hurt at first, and kind of tingled, but it is finally feeling much better now. A few weeks ago I got stung by some sort of black beetle looking thing. It left a big red mark and a small scab. I have never had that happen to me before either until then. The mosquitoes are also terrible around my house, but we have a pond not too far from here. We have also had a lot of wasps and hornets around the house this year, and my 2 year old son stuck his finger on one of their nests and got stung. We have also had a lot of grasshoppers here, but not as bad as the summers before this one. They may be really annoying, but thankfully at least they can't sting or bite you.
As for other things that I don't like about Oklahoma, I'll have to agree with everyone else that I don't like the heat and humidity during the summer. I also don't like the ice storms during the winter. Several years ago, we went for an entire month without electricity because the ice storm had damaged so many power lines. We do live in a rural area though, and were probably one of the last ones on the electric company's list to have our electricity restored.
I also don't like the way the red dirt around here stains your clothes, especially when you have kids like mine that practically roll around in it every chance they get. It is also hard to do any gardening where I live because the soil has so much clay in it. With the temperature being so hot right now, I could probably make my own bricks out of the dirt and let them bake outside.
I know it sounds like I have a lot of complaints about Oklahoma, but really, I love it here. There are going to be things you don't like about any place you live, I think. The things that I love about living here by far outnumber the things that I don't like about it.

caroljones,
that is sad about what your friends have been doing. there is so much more to do here than that.
jessm,
I have lived around ticks all my life, and when bitten nothing happened. This year my husband and I had Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Then a few days ago I was bitten by a spider in my own house. It could be brown recluse since we mostly have those inside. I am on antibiotics. Have yet to see scorpions here. Knock on wood. I was bitten by a beetle in CA. It blew in the car and went down my back. The pain was worse than this stupid spider bite, but the doctor feels it was a spider bite.
I don't mind the humidity here for some reason. I hated it in Florida. But I don't stay out in it either, and we do have air. When I go shopping it actually feels good to me, and yesterday it was 105. But I can't work in it very well. Just in the early mornings.
We don't have red soil in east OK, but we did in Florida, and I hated how it stained our clothing.

2&3. With demands of work and raising kids, a lot of people don't have time to go out anyway for entertainment. Besides, as high in cost as cable TV has become, one might as well stay home and enjoy what's on the tube. Going to church is a lot of peoples' idea of getting out. Churches don't charge admission.
4. If people want to do something about pollution, they're simply gonna have to say no to new hog farms, cow lots and mass chickens, and doubly so, if they're proposed to be located next to lakes and streams.
5. It's hard to know what do to with the state's brain drain. Stillwater and OSU are trying to do something about it with the Oklahoma Technology and Research Park.
Weather extremes can be a nuisance in Oklahoma what with droughts and brush fires last year and nearly daily rain and flash flooding this year. New people when moving here should keep that in mind and not live in fire and flood prone areas.
If you experienced the massive bug problem in Florida, then you know the bugs in Oklahoma don't amount to much.

Churches don't charge admission? What is that collection plate for then???

Boy what a downer. I don't know what kind of friends you had, but I really don't think all of OK is that way.
