Thanks for that post happytown. I was about to start a thread titled "5 Best Things in Oklahoma" but you beat me to it. Not to offend the OP, but you shouldn't be "looking" for the bad things about a place. Once you find them, it is quite easy to get trapped into negative feelings about an area. You should always concentrate on finding all the great things in the area. Once you discover that the great things outweigh the bad, the bad things tend to matter much less. Don't get me wrong, you will still encounter bad things, but instead of them being hemorrhoids, they will simply become pimples on your butt.

Not to be condescending, caroljones, but you listed nothing but peoples choices. This represents nothing about Oklahoma. This is indicative of any State.

Default Spiders and Ticks

Jessaka, I'm sorry that you got bitten by a brown recluse. I had about forgotten about those! I got bitten by one when I was about 9 years old (at least that's what the doctor thought it was). I still have a small scar on the back of my calf where it made a small crater in my leg. Spiders are just one more thing I don't like about Oklahoma, but other than that incident, they haven't really bothered me much.
We have had a lot of ticks here this year too. I would find at least three of them on each one of my kids each time they went outside, even for just a short time. Luckily we have never gotten sick because of them. I'm sorry that you and your husband did. The only other person that I know who has gotten sick from a tick bite is the principal at my kids' school. He contracted Lyme Disease from a tick bite while he was camping at one of our lakes.

Hi Jessm,

Thanks. I am not sure it was a brown recluse, but the doctor said it was a spider bite. it didn't turn black and it has been two days, so I am going off antibiotics.

Harry, there is good and bad about any area.

What are the best things:

1. People are the friendliest and most accepting of any place I have ever lived.
2. Scenery
3. And while the people are great there is a lot less of them, which to me only spells way less traffic
4. Less racism than many places I have lived. I say "less" because I haven't encountered any here, but if I say "no racism" someone will post that there is racism.
5. We have real seasons.

Harry, I already know the good.
I just wanted to know the bad too. I don't want to go to a state not knowing the bad things about it, because the shock of the bad things will only make them worse to me. No offense taken, but as I am moving there I do think I need to know the worst things about living there before I go there.

Carol, you can find people who do that everywhere. I don't like to have friends who assosiate with gangs or do things that will land them in prison, who hang out at bars all the time or who are addicted to gambling, (especially since I'm 17 and my friends would be too young for those 2 last things) so I think that I'm safe there.

And since I'm too lazy to go back and find other names that go with posts and reply directly to you, about the church charging with the collections plate?
That isn't charging admission. That is asking for donations to help the church, to give to people in the church who need it, to pay for whatever bills or parties and on and on. It isn't required to donate to the church, it is just something that can really help.

I hope nobody thinks I'm a negative person who goes looking for negatives. But all I have found on this site about Oklahoma is the positive and there is equal positive and negative everywhere. I want to know both so that I can really decide and know what I'm getting into before I jump into it, that's all. (If you read my other thread on here, it is pretty much all about the positives in Oklahoma.)

Now about brown recluses-

Are there any tricks or tips to keep these things outta my house? I have a huge fear of spiders, and I think I'd have a true full-blown panic attack if I saw one of these in the house. O_O

No offense taken Clover. You sound like a very intelligent 17 year old; your parents should be proud.

LOL! Your friends sound like a hoot.

You forgot 6. doing meth and losing mah teeff
7. gittin some tires burnin and drinkin 3.2
8. goin to wal mart n hollarin at my kids cuz they don't listen!

Hmm. 5 worst. We only get to pick 5 ??!!
My 5 worst are primarily RURAL oklahoma, and I mean deep deep BACK WOODS:

5: People pick one place and start dumpin crap, then everyone else starts dumping. It is amazing how much crap people can actually just get rid of. No shame and no concience.
4: People with big pickups drive way too fast and try to pass you on a two lane, then just get off at the next dirt road.
3: Pit bulls, undernourished horses, people dump puppies left and right
2: Getting stuck behind a farmer driving a tractor on a state hwy. Doesn't really **** me off, because it's always some friendly old farmer, but it happens a lot around here.
1 1/2: some poor cow standing in the middle of the dirt road staring me down just daring me to run her over!
1: garage sales/auctions where everything is priced like it's MACY's !! they are really big on auctions around here. Everything under the sun! goats, scrap metals, old mattresses and plastic flowers!

No offense taken at all Clover.

I can only assume, though, since you already know the good, you also already know about most of the things to be wary about. You are just validating some of your concerns. And just by you approaching your situation from an analytical perspective, I have no doubt you will be a very welcomed addition to OK. There is nothing negative in that.
