*"An oil well directly south of the Capitol was drilled in 1941 and named “Petunia #1” because drilling was done in the middle of a flower bed. It produced up to 600 barrels of oil per day before running dry in 1986. It is one of the several oil wells surrounding the capitol." *State Capitol |

Phillips Petroleum Co. spudded Capitol #1 on Nov. 10, 1941, and drilled it to a depth of 6,618 feet in 171 days. The well was nicknamed Petunia because it was drilled in a flower bed at the foot of the Capitol's south entrance. The well is actually 431 feet north of the top of the hole in the Capitol's south parking lot. It was drilled diagonally so it would produce from a spot underneath the center of the Capitol. By the time Phillips plugged the well in 1986 because of declining production, the Petunia had pumped 1.5 million barrels of oil and 1.6 billion cubic feet of natural gas from a mile and a quarter below the Capitol. Phillips transferred ownership of the well to the state Historical Society in August 1986, for preservation as a monument and for promotion of tourism. |
