That is a shame. My daughter was in Camp Fire for years and it was a great program. She was a counselor at camp DaKaNi all one summer and it did her a lot of good.

Just curious, how DOES it cost to maintain horses?

My best half (Bjb123) and I were wondering if the Camp Fire Girls were still around? We haven't hear of them in years up in these parts. Aleast those kind of programs were good for the kids to learn how to socialize and do good things for others. Not to forget, "it got them out of the house and away from the TV". As Martha would say, (and thats a good thing) .

To feed a horse during the winter costs about $60 to $100, depending on how much exercise they are getting. During the summer if you have enough land they can eat the grass, but if you ride them a lot you would still have to give them grain. It gets expensive really fast if they get sick or hurt and you have to have the vet. For the Camp Fire, they would have to hire someone to care for the horses all year. Then you have to put shoes on them which is about $50 every six weeks.

Then there are the people who just put the horse in a field and it is up to the horse whether it lives or dies.

One good thing about Horses in CA. Next to me was a pasture were horses were kept. When ever you seen the horses running the fence line, you could guarantee that within the next 3-5 an earth quake was going to hit.
Everytime.

That sounds like our neighbor. The old man went blind and his son is taking over the care of his homestead. Peg have you seen the horse pic thread? You oughta submit pictures of your horses there.
