Oklahoma pics
I am going to post a few pics here. We are in South-Southeastern OK. Hughes County, close to Synopsis ol stompin grounds.
Some of the folks need to heed the weather warnings. In exchange for quiet, peaceful solitude, we live with hot unbearable humid summers, ice storms in winter and strong all day winds in spring. Although this spring has been super nice. Lots of rain.
Maybe other folks can chip in a few pics for those contemplating the move to Oklahoma from Cali or other points on the map.
This is southbound, leaving Hooterville, the tree line is due to the south canadian river. Just around the bend is where a driver was killed after running over a bull sleeping on the hwy last year.
Ice storm. Little snow gets covered in thin layer of freezing rain which coats the streets and makes walking on sidewalks hazardous. Non-scenic, ain't it. Good. Maybe folks will not move here.

Looking west at the South Canadian River in Hughes County, OK. Lots of deer, turkey, a few wild pigs come up from Arkansas, and supposedly quick sand.
A closer look at the aftermath of an okie ice storm. This is the storm where our friend who just moved here from california got really mad and said no one told him it got this cold in Oklahoma! We laughed. I would love to have snow over ice anyday!@! Anyone got a scraper handy? This was taken 1/15/07

Note the little ball of ice atop the radio antenna. Cool.

Wow! Great pics redbird. Yeah, the weather in Oklahoma can be quite weird. I am well familiar with Hooterville (aka Holdenville). We shopped at the Ben Franklin five and dime about once a month during my childhood. Oh, those days - I remember them so fondly. Thank you so much for the pictures of my old stomping grounds (I love that place so very much) - and thanks for thinking of me - You're a champ!

Yeah. Ice storms are freakin unbelievable. Stars at night, coyotes howling, and ticks and chiggers!!
I lived in San Clemente, CA back in 1986 and told my landlord I was going to live in Oklahoma. He said OK was the a$$hole of the world.

Very nice pics!!! OK is a very pretty state and it's too bad the guy from Cal. felt otherwise. My guess he was never there.
Those ice storms can be awful. We rarely have them up here because normally they are full fledged snowstorms. The one advantage that you seem to have is that it's all melted in a few days. Did you guys have areas that lost electricity this past winter like Mo. did? It seems like it was weeks until everyone there finally was up and running again.
Thanksgiving 2005 we had a terrible ice storm up here and some people in the country didn't get electricity restored until after New Years.

That's funny!!!
How do you deal with the snow or ice storms down there? If I remember correctly, you don't have snow plows. Do you have county or state trucks that spread the sand/salt mixture on the roads? What happens when you have a freak snowfall like last year?

Great pics. We had such an ice storm in Tahlequah, but it didn't last long. I stayed home a couple of days before driving. We had warnings, so you could stock up on food. The city came along with sand and spread it on the roads, and that didn't take long. Like I said, it didn't stay on the ground longer than a few days to a week. Snow lasted a week but melted some each day.

So does everyone just keep going during and after a storm or do many things just shut down? I was amazed that some areas of the South just stop moving and close up when it snows.
Jessaka, I know that you're retired, but what do you see the people who are still working doing during that time? I'd be guessing some of the same things as up here, but that'd probably be silly. I doubt that you use chains on your tires or that nearly everyone has a 4X4 pickup as far south as OK.
Oh yea~more pics, please. LOL I love to look at pics. It's my fave part of the forum.
