Thinking About Moving From Philly To Anadarko Oklahoma
Hey everybody I'm thinking about moving from Philadelphia to Anadarko soon and I was wondering if anybody in here knows anything about the town of Anadarko like the weather, prices of housing and schools. Hope somebody can help me.

Hi signwoman
I don't know if we will have any posters from Anadarko, so I will make a stab at this.
The weather in Anadarko will be hot and sunny in the summer, but this is a drier area so the humidity would not be quite so oppressive. We have several threads on the forum about tornadoes for you to read. I would think regular winds might be an issue in the area. Spring and fall are nice, winters are generally mild with occasional snow.
Anadarko is the headquarters for several Tribes, the Apache being the most famous. Every year in August they have the American Indian Exposition there. I have been there a couple of times but it is usually too hot for me.
Too get an idea of home prices, you can check realtor.com. There you can see pictures and descriptions of homes for sale and the prices are listed.
Why Anadarko?

Anadarko and Philly are like sister cities, they resemble each other in so many ways. Sorry, I just had to say that. peggy nailed the weather right on the money. It's very different from Philly, but if it's that kind of change you're looking for, Anadarko is probably the place. I've never been to Anadarko but it is famous for the Indian tribes. Anadarko is home to "Indian City USA (broken link)."
It's only about 17 miles from nowhere. And yes, there is such a place as Nowhere, Oklahoma.

Ha! This cracked me up. I've never been to Anadarko, but I've met people from there, and it's hard for me to imagine a bigger culture shock move within the U.S. than Philly to Anadarko. (I didn't think the Fresno-to-Whitesboro guy could be beat, but I believe this tops it!)

I think Las Vegas to Wilson would be way up there as far as culture shock.

Well, okay, if we're going for made-up extremes, I vote Berkeley to Idabel.

Oops, I just realized you weren't making up the Vegas-to-Wilson one. I've never even heard of Wilson, which is rare for me even with the smallest Oklahoma towns, so I can't comment on that one.

Now, signwoman, we are not making fun of you. We are just commenting on potential culture shock.

My first question is why on g-d's green earth would you want to move to "dodge?" -as we Indians call Anadarko.
You will definitely NOT like it unless you are.... (melodramatic voice tone) ... one of us... one of us... (what the heck does that mean? I have no idea)
Culturally, it is your basic rancher/redneck/Indian town. I think the high school is 60% native american. Its 5A I think, so by OK standards, a pretty good sized high school.
It can be a rough town. I believe it has 4 or 5 tribal headquarters, the BIA Regional Headquarters, and one of the oldest Indian boarding schools in the nation. A sign used to say "Anadarko, Indian Capitol of the World". The folks in Gallup like to question that. Not trying to scare you off, just think you might want some inside info. Personally, I love it. Wouldn't want to live there, because there isn't a whole lot of work except govt.
The "Indian Fair" [google American Indian Exposition] kicks off with a parade that draws "skins" from all over. As a kid, I used to love the horse races (all Indian owned horses), a shetland pony race for boys/girls which is -really- funny to watch, and a week long pow wow, which used to draw some of the best traditional pow wow dancers from all across America. I believe the Indian fair is about a 90 years old and many natives make it a tradition to camp out all week. They have a pretty cool arts and crafts building, not much touristy crap, for the most part, it is genuine.
Weather wise, the weather sucks like all OK does in summer. Sorry, I have no basic residential city data info. P.S. I paid $90/month for my apt in late 70's.
