Hi there. My name is Wendy and I will be moving out there hopefully in about a month. I've got skills in transportation, construction and computers and will be needing a job. Can anyone possibly give any leads? Thanks in advance,
Wendy

Jammie,

Is Grove a historic town, that is, does it have a lot of historic buildings on the main street? Besides the lake, what did you like about it?

I am sure Jammie will respond, but let me simply say that Grove has a very small actual downtown. There are a few old buildings, but it does not have that old courthouse townsquare feel. The courthouse is low and modern and rather minimalist. There are a few old brick buildings that are being renovated. Most of the town is sprawled out with more modern buildings and strip malls. Grove was never a very big town and so when it grows it does so with new, modern buildings. It has beautiful approaches via Sailboat bridge and Honey Creek bridge. Much of the town is on a long peninsula and that is mostly along the main drag with low-slung modern buildings. In short, it has the general impression of "newness" and a work in progress. Tallequah has a much more classic and older type downtown as it is more of a center of overall trade and commerce with a longer history.

There are a few more quaint botique like touristy places and galleries around town. The plan is to create a more historical feel to the immediate downtown with more renovation and some sort of cobblestone walkways and plantings.

Thanks Kurt, you gave a wonderful description of Grove. I think the trip up there, especially when the pelicans come will be nice. I also noticed that they had a lot of things going on their during the year.

I like town squares, and for those who have ever watched The Gilmore Girls on TV, that is a perfect town to me, although created on a Hollywood set. Darn.

I like the plans for Grove's downtown and must check out those boutiques someday.

Yup, Kurt described it perfectly.

I guess we liked the friendliness, the beautiful lake, the pelicans and other birds there~the nature part of it.

We aren't shoppers, but we did notice that they had an area where the shoppes looked so neat and had nice storefronts.

You may want to check out the local classifieds in their newspaper. Just google Grove, OK newspaper and it'll come up. From what I understand, they always have employment opportunities in the casinos in that area. Maybe they'd have office jobs available??? Or did you mean that you're a computer tech? Another possibility is that there may be some construction jobs since they're building the new hospital and the new resort.

I hope you have good luck. Grove is a town that would be hard not to like. Everyone is friendly there and it has a nice small town feel to it.

thanks jammie, I can't wait to see all the birds there. We have so many in our back yard that it is unbelievable. One day I went outside and bird poo was everywhere; I think from the flock of Starlings. I wondered how people ever used clotheslines? And yet i want a clothesline.

Jessaka, guess I never thought of that while we were watching the beautiful birds by Grand Lake.

Wendy, the only input that I have about the weather there is this~I've kept an eye on it for two years now. This past winter the Grove area had a freak 10 inch snowfall. Like Jessaka said, it did appear that the days warm up enough to get rid of it fast. And from any records I've found, that was a HUGE snowfall for Grove.

Also, we came back home from Grove the third week in Oct. 2006. I was wearing shorts and a tank top the morning that we left there. I live the third state north and every 100 miles or so you could feel it getting colder. When we got home, we learned that we had a small snowfall while we were gone and it was very chilly compared to Grove. The Grove area still was green and warm with all the flowers still in bloom. The trees all still had their full leaves and were just thinking of changing color.

OK, I'm glad you have your location in the corner. Here's a weather comparison map to see how it differs from where you live now.

Jammie/Jessaka: That temp comparison chart stuff is great. It gives you a good idea of what to expect. I was in Grove over Christmas 2005 while I was looking to buy my house. It was very warm. Up in the 60's for most of the time. We did get a cold snap while I was there for about 2 weeks that brought it down to 38 degrees. It all depends on whether the air is sweeping down the plains form the North--across Montana and the Dakotas form old Canada--or up from the Gulf of Mexico via Texas and Louisiana. One thing I did like was the lake in the winter. The sky was very blue with low humidity and the lake took on a deep blue color that I remembered from my boyhood in the Fall in Minnesota. Our lake would take on that beautiful color. But then it would freeze over for about 6 months--ugh!--unless you like to drag a fish house out there and sit around a hole in the ice. That is for the birds. I want a lake that remains open year round. Grand might get a little ice around the edges--but that just makes it interesting. I saw no ice at all when I was there over Christmas 2005. I would say that record low of -15 is pretty rare. Think how cold it must have been further North! I have experienced 50 below in Minnesota. You just pray the furnace does not go out and the pipes don't freeze! Ooooo! Just thinking about winter in Minnesota gives me the shiverin' willies.

Kurt, I know what you mean. I checked Grove against the town that I live in. Grove's record low was in 1989~the -15. The record low where I live was -50 in 1955. (My birth year, by the way) Both towns had the same record high which was 116. Ours was in 1934 or 36, I believe. Grove does have a bit more humidity then we have here, though. But that's ok cause I like warmth and humidity.

10 inches of snow in Grove. I am glad that I live south in Tahlequah. I think Grove is zone 6 and we are zone 7. I have noticed that cold never lasts long. It seems as soon as I am tired of it it warms up, as soon as I am tired of the lack of sunshine, which amounts to a few days, the sun comes out again.
