I ask the lady why they can't contol the pumps at the counter. She said they could but the company wants them to leave the controls off during the day because their going to change the pumps, but still hasn't gotten around to it. So once in awhile they have "drive offs".
Hey Mk,

Do you remember the big energy crunch back in the "70's" during the Reagan administration, and how bad it had gotten with people stealing gas from each other?

In San Antonio in the late 60's, during a price war, gas was at 19.9 cents/gallon. Hard to believe maybe, but true.

Well my Dad got tired of people stealing (siphoning) gas out of our farm tractors tanks at night, so he revived an old trick that his Father use many years before. He made a cylinder that slipped down through the fill hole of the gas tank and would rest on the bottom so the cap could be put back on. Then he filled the cylinder with sewage water from the gutter in the dairy parlor, and you could just imagine what we found the next morning next to the tractor along with hoes and gas can. OMG

I remember getting gas based on the last digit of your license plate. Even numbers one day, odd numbers the next.

Back in the Dark Ages when I first learned to drive, a person could fill a tank for less than 3.00, and a lot of people would just pull in and get a dollar's worth. AND you got someone to pump it, clean the windows, and check the oil, too. Lots of gas wars, too - people would keep an eye on the price signs and when they got low enough, then they'd fill the tank.
