Lots of gas wars, too - people would keep an eye on the price signs and when they got low enough, then they'd fill the tank.[/QUOTE
At one time in my younger life, I worked as a "Service Station Attendant" for, "Texaco".

Here's a list(pics) of old Service stations in every state.(15 in Ohio) Is your hometown listed?

Diesel is so high now that some truckers can't make a profit. It's gotten to the point that they'd do just as well to park it or find another job.

With the fuel prices being the way they are, I'm surprized that the TEAMSTERS haven't called for nation wide trucker strike. Boy if that ever happened, it would shut this country down inside 3 days, the warehouses in this country are only set-up for 3 days supply service.

That's right, at one point, everything is moved by truck.
So the high of Diesel causes everything else to go up.

I remember the big trucker strike back in the early 70's, it really crippled this country and brought it to it's knees.

Well, with all the sunshine they get in Oklahoma the solar-cell charger would work great. But here in Ohio with the lack there of it could cost a few bucks, but it may be worth the cost .

No, I grew up in suburban St Louis. All the major companies had stations [mostly boring looking] and a lot of independents. There were a few downtown where it was 'cool' to go because they also had black market cigarettes. The one thing they all had in common was pump jockeys, windows washed, oil checked, tire work, and most of them did auto repairs, too. One of the stations that also specialized in body work near my house also had a car they'd built with 2 front ends and 2 transmissions. There were always a couple kids who practiced with it all year long so they could drive it in parades - did a lot of neat tricks, too. None of them were like now where you have to pump your own gas and go to a repair shop or tire shop. Most of the ones I've been to lately, riding along with others, also have conveniece stores and some of them have video rentals. I'm not sure what fried chicken and videos have to do with gas - oh, and you have to pay for air, too - now, but it seems to be the thing. I find it just about as strange as being able to buy espresso at a bait shop, which I have also seen.
