Default Cushing or Stillwater??

My family and I may be relocating from Kansas due to a job opportunity in Cushing. I'm wondering, though, if we should live in Stillwater, even though that would require a commute and the real estate is quite a bit higher there.

I ask because we are on the liberal side and although we are open to everyone, we have found many "conservative" people not that into us. We plan to "unschool" our child, live a somewhat sustainable and self-sufficient lifestyle within the city limits, and eat mostly vegetarian. We are also not into sports, sorry Sooners. I see that Stillwater has a Quaker meeting and a UU Church, and both are right up our alley. We are not really Christian, but aim to be spiritual and live a virtuous life, so to say.

I worry most about my son getting plenty of healthy socialization with kids from families that are ok with unschoolers and non-Christians.

Should we pay the extra housing prices and live in Stillwater or will we fit in okay in Cushing? Or will we be outcasts even in Stillwater?

Thanks in advance!!

In general, most people won't bother you with their conservative beliefs but yes Stillwater would be better than Cushing as far as that goes. Cushing is an old refinery town that has seen better days. I'd pick Stillwater for sure.

One place you might consider is Perkins. It's between Stillwater and Cushing and would save you a lot of time driving to Cushing. Perkins is a small town that is slowly morphing into a bedroom community of Stillwater. It has a nice golf course and good schools and is becoming a very desirable place for Stillwater. It is about 10 minutes south of Stillwater and less than 20 minutes over to Cushing.

You could have all the advantages of Stillwater without having to deal with all hassles of the college kids and traffic.

Another thing. The more desirable part of Stillwater is west of the town proper so your commute to Cushing may be closer to 40 minutes from that side of town.

Thanks for the suggestions, I really appreciate it! Perkins looks like a nice town, I'm gonna investigate it further.
