We are moving to Ft Sill sometime this summer and i just got finished reading this forum and found some very helpful information. I do have a couple of questions. We have not yet decided on renting a house or an apartment, nor will we until we get a chance to see the area, but there are 3 apartments that have caught my eye. The first one is Pecan Valley , 2nd Summit Ridge, and 3rd Sheridan Square . It's hard looking for places to live in this area because most apartment places do not post urls to view their apartments online. If anyone has any information on these apartments and or any other apartment recommendations would be a great help.........

If your stay at Ft. Sill is longer than 3 years, then I would look at buying a house vs. renting. Good investment vs. giving someone else your money.
The Apartment complex in Pecan Valley just opened about a year ago, not sure if they are kid friendly or not. It is on the North West side of town. Not alot out that way.
The one at Summit Ridge opened about 3 years ago. Looks nice from the outside, never been inside one of the apartments. It is on the Central West side of town. It is about 1 mile from Eisenhower High and Middle schools. I think the owner of these apartments own several other Complexes in town also.
The Sheridan Square one is smack dab in the middle of town. It is about 3 blocks from a Super Wal-Mart and Sam's Club as well as Office Depot, Hobby Lobby, Arby's and other fast food places. These opened about 20 years ago. Still in good shape. I think alot of College students that go to Cameron Univeristy live here as well as young soldiers.
Most of the Apartment complexes in town are full or near full. It seems that when a new one is built, it gets full within 6 months.
Hope that helps...

Thanks for the details on the apartments. Unfortunately we don't know how long we will be stationed @ Ft. Sill suppose to be for only a year. We are planning to visit Lawton about 1 month before we move there to find a place to live. We are just trying to narrow down the choices before we go up there looking. We would love to find a house but wanted a back up plan just in case we couldn't find 1 with in our means.

Sorry so long to respond, the house is not that big about 1500 plus sq feet, but has two seperate garages, one is a double car garage and the other is a big work shop with pull down attic stairs with tons of storage. There is also a cute little 2 story 7 x 10 storage building shed with a second story play house. Water well, pond, deck. Lots of big trees on almost 5 acres.

Fort Bliss v.s. Fort Sill
Hi,
We are probably moving to Fort Sill this year but it is not defenet yet. I would like to do some research before we decide.
I have the exact same feelings about El Paso as you are. I'm from Hungary originally and I thought, learning to speak english will be enough to live in the United States but I was wrong. To order to get a job outside of the base, I better learn spanish.
Since you already there almost a year what would you say about Fort Sill?
Is it better than Bliss?
Did you find a good area to leave? We have a small child we don't go out to often so we like the nice, quiet towns.
We don't want to leave really far out either from the base.
I was teaching Ballroom Dancing before we decide it to join the military
and I would love to continue to do that, of course I have to see what the town has to offer.
I appreciate your time and thank you for all the help you can give us.

I am looking forward to the move!! I hope they speak english in Oklahoma cause they sure dont here, I am a native Texan, but El Paso might as well be a foreign country.
I hope someone can answer my questions about areas to live, are there maybe nice older neighborhoods? Old as in "charm" not old as in run down. Schools are not an issue. No kids, just dogs. I am hoping for some info from other military families that have PCSed to the Fort Sill area in the last few months. but I will appreciate any reply.
thanks

Ive managed to read must but not all of the postings in this thread and yet i still have some questions and concerns. BUGS ?????? The army is setting me up to have a major heart attack
It seems when my fiance comes from deployment his next station will be ft. sill, right now he's stationed at ft.drum, ny. I managed to do some research as soon as he told me Oklahoma was the next move, although the move wont take place until march 2010. I am city girl so moving so far out of my comfort zone is making me anxious, nervous and crazy. My fiance was stationed at ft. sill for basic training some yrs back so the move for him is no biggy but he didnt live off base at the time either.
We dont have any children so schools aren't my concern but housing/jobs are. As I mentioned I did some research and came across housing info that stated housing in OK is 99% single family homes and apt/condos and townhouses are roughly 1% .... is this really true? If ft. sill becomes 100% (right now its at 93.7%) he will be stationed there for 2 yrs, we both feel it makes no sense to buy a home and then have to sale it in 2 yrs, it would be cheaper to rent but renting seems to not exist. So with that said Ive looked at housing in elgin, fletcher, sterling and lawton. There seems to be more homes avail in lawton than the other cities/town. There was a map posted on here of good vs bad neighborhood in the lawton area - has anything changed since then being I see alot of construction is happening?
What are the jobs like? I am a licensed cosmetologist and I love what i do so working in this profession would help me stay sane. I was on craigslist and see that most of the jobs are in okc is this true as well?
Sorry for such a long post any help is good help many, many thanks Oh and I know 2010 is a bit of a time stretch but I want to get some info on whats happened since 07/08 to now and what works are in the future there for 09/2010 .... thanks again.
