I don't really do maps that well but if you scroll down on this link it gives directions to public access points in OK and AR.

Guide To The Ouachita National Forest

This is really a partial list of places to ride. I was always so envious of people who didn't have to trailer their horse somewhere to ride. It would be possible to find a place very near trails like these in OK, and probably in AR and MO.

Trail Riding

This organization has really worked hard to ensure access for horse riders to trails in OK. They also work to improve the trails, and keep the trails clear. You might want to contact them to keep their eye out for your perfect property. They also used to have classified ads in their newsletter. Keep us posted whatever you do. I would like to hear about your choices.OETRA Home Page

I lived and played in all three areas. NE ArKansas is more upscale. Vehicle tags aka license plantes and real estate taxes are higher in Arkansas than the other two states. Fayetteville is in the Boston Mountains.

Oklahoma is horse country, Grove, Oklahoma is in NE OK on Grand Lake in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. County property and taxes are way cheaper than Arkansas. OK has some very good hospitals in Tulsa. Good food too. Tulsa and OKC have tornados and terrible storms on a regular basis; Grove does not. Grove has a pretty good hospital with life flight. and EMT. The rancers and farmers all gather at the restaurant on Main Street most mornings for coffee. And almost always on one Saturday or Sunday for the buffet breakfast. If you want to know whats going on in the city go schmooze with Carolyn at City Hall or drop in at Walmart early in the morning. Good people in this town. Pretty good big animal vets too. Lost of stuff to do in and around Grove.

SW Missouri is okay to visit. It is the cheapest place to live. The meidcal care and health standards reflect it. In most cases the vets are more qualified than the MD's. There are good doctors but you have to root like a sow to find them. In fact while I was still living in MO, I took y spouse to the hospital with an infected foot. AFter ER, wound care, a surgeon, and two other docotrs, I finally took spouse to a local clinic as this doc was one I rooted to find. He did a culture, My spouse had untreated MRSA for at least six months. The only place sox and shoes were off was in the hospital. This is why CDC says MRSA is a community diesease.

Of all the areas I liked Grove, OK area the best because it is a progressive town. There are a lot of transplants and we liked it that way because it meant diversity. Bernice Honey Creek State Park on Lake Rd #1 i Grove is awesome. BTW, all three areas offer an assorment of snakes and spiders. ..

I have to share this story. My cousin lives near Grove on 40 acres. She's had her daughter's gelding since they were both young. Cousin lives on a dead end dirt street. One son lives on one end with this kids; the other son lives on the other end with his kids. In the middle is a family with a horse and neixt door to cousin is another family with a horse. Her horse gets as often as he can and visits family and friends. She used to get frantic when horse got loose until she noticed one day that every time she fed the heeler on the porch the horse would nudge dog aside and eat the dog food because it had molasses in it. The next time the horse got loose she went into the middle of the road, called him and rattled a bag of near empty dog food. She's captured her escapee with the dog food ever since. I don't know if the horse is dirt dumb or hopeful because she hasn't had a dog for ten years.

I live in Eastern OK. I think NWA is probably the best place. Plenty to do. Now, I have cattle so I am busy but when I retire I think I'd prefer around the Mountain HOMe, Eureka area. GRove really feels like a boat community and people commute to Tulsa to work. I enjoy the area and visit the lakes but it doesn't have a country feel to me.
