I never heard of anyone in a community rejecting a little boy because of his health issues. That is terrible.

Seriously.

All ThreeDucks has to do is give RedBird and I their address and we'll gladly go give 'em a punch in the face.

Bethany. Yeah I can see why you were miserable.

Close enough. Choctaw/Creek here. I was fine with the Chickasaws until they built a better casino than ours in Durant!

My favorite uncle and his wife lived in Bethany (or was it Warr Acres - think they're side by side). It seem like a pleasant enough, if modest, area. My parents are from Oklahoma originally and I've driven there about three times. I never had any issues on the interstates or driving around Oklahoma City. Drivers seemed courteous enough and I never had anything happen that made me shake my head (even sporting California plates ).

As far as getting in fast lanes and just sitting there driving slowly, I think its something of a rural area phenomenon, regardless of state. They do it chronically in my area of the Sacramento Valley.

I would be on the warpath too if anyone messed with my kid. Big time. You can rant away. I think there was another thread on autism. Something needs to be said if your son was turned away from lack of resources.

To get back on topic, I don't think driving through OK is freaky, and I have been to all four corners. If there was a place that outsiders would consider freaky, it would be the southeastern part of the state. Although I never had any freaky banjo playing freakiness experience there. I have heard stories. By freaky, I mean hostile backwoods kind of vibe.

I find too often that people don't want to drive the speed limit on the 10 mile two lane stretch of highway 33 from highway 177 west to Langston. My guess is the drivers are probably elderly rural people who don't see so good, so are to scared to drive any faster. So if I'm right, old folks, please take care of your cataracts.

So far, I'm finding Oklahoma drivers to be pretty awesome and some of the best drivers I've been around- then again, I learned to drive with Bostonians and New Yorkers. Oklahomans speed like crazy on the highways- I've been tailgated when I'm already going 85- but are otherwise pretty courteous and don't seem to be out to get me. It's a huge relief.

I would have to agree with you on that. On my last visit there it was the only placed where I was hassled in any way. I was there in the summer of 2009 waiting for my house to sell so that I would have enough money to buy a small house with a few acres in one of the small towns in OK. My truck needed some expensive repairs so I didn't have enough cash left over for an apartment or motel room. I was living out of my truck which was ok because it has plenty of room. I had unloaded my household items into a storage closet on W. Reno and I planned to stay at nearby truck stops until my house sold. During the days I needed a shady spot to park my truck so that my cats and I wouldn't get roasted.

One day I made the mistake of wandering up Rockwell where I found a small park close to the airport. I found a quiet spot to park and was reading a book when the Bethany PD swarmed me. Someone living near the park had called them with some BS story that gave them the idea that I was a dangerous criminal and they were ready to shoot to kill. If that person had bothered to talk to me they would found out that was the furthest from the truth. That was the last time I will ever go to that d@#ned city.

My experience in the rest of OK was the exact opposite. I especially enjoyed the time I spent around Shawnee, OK. My general experience was that the drivers were very courteous, even with someone driving around the state with CT plates. If you really want to see discourteous drivers, try spending some time in Connecticut.

Here is the latest example from my town: Meriden police still searching for vehicle involved in hit and run accident - MyRecordJournal.com: Meriden News - Myrecordjournal.com

"John Genis was riding his bicycle south on Lewis Avenue about 9:30 p.m. when a small, dark red car struck him from behind. Genis flipped onto the vehicle and held onto the sunroof while the driver tried to pry him loose.

He was eventually flung from the vehicle near Bartlett Street, sustaining a broken leg and several abrasions from the incident..."

It's no surprise that I can't sell my house in a place like this. I'm seriously considering taking up a collection so that I can donate my house to a local charity and get out of here while I'm still alive.

I'm sorry about your experience. From my own experience, for whatever reason, something is very "off" with that city. It has an almost backwoods vibe even though its completely surrounded by a very dense part of OKC. The police department has a well earned Barney Fife reputation around these parts.

It's a dying town, frankly, and I give it 10 years before OKC just puts it out of its misery and annexes the place.

I've been here almost 7 years and am always impressed at the warmness of people here. With that in mind, there are definitely towns that are "rougher" than others.
