No, no, no. You can live in Ft. Gibson and work in Muskogee or go shopping there. Or you can live in Tahlequah. I shop in Muskogee all the time. It is a quiet town. I wouldn't want to live there, and I imagine that some neighborhoods are worse than others. Hating traffic as I do I even drive to Muskogee rather than Tulsa or Ft. Smith or Fayetteville, AR. Muskogee is 10 ro 15 minutes from Ft. Gibson, 30 from Tahlequah.

We've seen this one.
The price is certainly cheap.

Yel, some house you want to just tear down and consider that you are buying land.
Welling is actually 5 minutes east of Tahlequah so really no closer than 1 hour and 25 minutes. I really like that area, but we didn't want to live in the country, although if we were younger we would. It is also close to the Illinois River, well, so is Tahlequah, and it is closer to mountains.

My goodness Griffs, it sounds as though "hardcore Christians" and "redneck mentality" as well as "bumpkins and creationist-types" are making Ok a not so great place to live. Is it true that all these folks are bad news and there is not a loving one in the bunch? What a sad commentary; a little sincere love could go such a very long way. I suspect I best stay where I am as I might not fit in too well.
I do hope the lives of you and yours will have the richest blessings!!!!

I have not been bothered by the hardcore Christians and redneck mentality here. Griffs has been. Oklahoma is a great place to live, and they make it an even better place with their kindness. No one has tried to convert me. I have not read Griff's messages in a very long time. I will go back and read them now if I have time.
I am back. You are referring to his first post on this thread. What he says is correct, but if you love people it doesn't bother you in the least. But I have not met an unfriendly person here, not even in smaller towns. I am sure you will find them somewhere. Here is Griff's post:
Quote:
Tahlequah is one of the nicer places to live, if you have to be stuck in Oklahoma.
Yes, the state has a lot of ultra-conservatives, hardcore christians and an overall redneck mentality, but Tahlequah is a bit more progressive.
In general, the state is probably better as far as issues of race goes than deeper south like Georgia, Louisiana, Alabama, even rural Texas, etc. Smaller towns would be iffy, but any college town would probably present no real problem for your family.
I've spent a lot of time in Tahlequah and have family there. It's quite pretty (as Oklahoma goes) and, as I say, the presence of the university is probably a help as far as it being a little more open-minded.
This is a slightly different matter to your concern, but my sister who lives in Tahlequah is gay, and she and her partner are very open but have had no problems and have a large group of straight and gay friends. In fact, my sister works for the District Attorney and her partner sits on the Chamber of Commerce.
I have to say, the circle of people I know in Oklahoma are not at all racist and wouldn't look twice at a mixed family. But smaller, more rural towns are likely to be at the very least overly curious and at worst possibly a little hostile. There are a lot of bumpkins and creationist-types here. It's just a sad cause of living in this part of the country where there is no real value placed on education outside of MVPs on some draggly football team and beer deals at the local liquor store.
By the way, if you don't mind me asking-- where would you be coming from?

What about hard core anti-creationist types and hardcore leftists and atheists? These terms are equally applicable across the spectrum.
If you are as intolerant as your words seem indicate, then it probably is a good idea to stay put. You know what they say; if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Blessings to you as well.

Gutherie is more than 15,000. Tahlequah is 14,000. I think we have home schoolers around here. I will see what I can find.

easttxmomma, you might want to look at the support groups for homeschooling in different areas: support groups
