there are places close to visit for mountains and ocean.
Arkansas and Colorado for mountains.Houston/Galveston area,the Gulf,for semi-ocean.

and going back home to California for visits is so easy to do.

the last time I went home,I took my wife and kids and we flew, we had to fly into Sacremento, rent a car,and drive up to Sonora.(usually when I go myself I try to make I-80 drives pretty much in a day.I always stop at this one truck stop just over the mountain from Wyoming, into Utah, for a short nap, then go on in.on the way back I can usually make it to SaltLakeCity, get a short nap, then maybe one more little nap somewhere in Wyoming or Nebraska. That trip thru Nebraska is BORING..).the trip with her was nice for me,and an awesome experience for my Okie born and bred wife and kids.shes well traveled but had never been to Cali other than getting to put a toe in the ocean when she was as a kid, then turning around and going home. Her father was an AmericanAirlines mechanic/inspector and had to work on a plane and took the whole family for a visit to Cali.they got to put one toe in the ocean, then get back to the airport to go back home to Oklahoma. That was her only visit.on our visit, she loved the drives in the mountains.then took her to San Fran.she got to go to the bridge, the ocean, lunch at Pier39,walked around Chinatown, etc. She loved Monterrey when we went out to visit my brother.Big Sur.Carmel to visit a buddy of mine.the Napa area and Carmel valley horseshoe for wine tasteings.went up and down Hwy1 and 101 for some drives.she didnt want to come back home.I got it tho.even tho she didnt suspect what I knew.it was nice for her to visit, but also nice to return to Okiehoma for her also.her life is here in Oklahoma and she would never be happy there, once the new wore off.some of the negatives others write about just didnt bother me I guess because I tend to take the good with the bad.I do that here also.and its more affordable here.

and Oklahoma people are super nice.most anyways.its weird for me to see people smile at you so much. and they say 'Thank you' and 'excuse me' alot here.weird for me.

Turlock.hehe.I used to have to drive down to Turlock from Sonora just to find a foosball table to play on.I would go to the mall or WorldMarket or Costco or whatever in Modesto for wants/needs then go over to Turlock before going home and play some foosball.
Merced for monster truck races.
Modesto for movies.I usually went to George Lucas's THX theatre downtown Modesto for my movies.
Jamestown for my motorcycle parts.

anyways.you'll love it here.its growing on me.I'm getting used to it and ***** about things less and less.one thing not to do is bring 'California snobbery' with you.hard to do."well,we had this, and we had that,in California",etcetc.you know the drill.Okies are receptive to outsiders better than Californians.true born and bred Californians HATE outsiders for some reason.most.but not all.they think people are taking something away from them when they move in there.like its their state, stay away.and now theyre the ones moving out as fast as the new people moving in.weird.

but now I know what it means to say,"nice to visit but wouldnt want to live there".I understand now...
I am sure we will Love it there I want to Thank you for all your thread and info. on places to go to see Moutains and Ocean Once we get setteled there and we can plan things like getting away and seeing more we will want to see TN. also my aunt lives there and Iwant to see FL.to We are keeping our home in CA.also we don't really need to sale it so we have deceided to keep it.Will rent it out .Turlock id where i was born and raised but I know evry place that spoke of We have been to them all We have all our family and friends here my hubby is 53 and I am 44 so all whole life is here but we lok forward to the change . Hubby can retire at 59 there and we can travel all over and do what ever we want that is another reason we are leaving Ca. we cannot retire here the cosyt of living is to high here . But we will always visit Ca. My daughter and her Hubby and our 2 grandkids just bought a very nice home in BA and they love it so far .I know we will need a pool put in when summer gets there as we are not use to the humdity there We will have to adjust to the change in climate and weather in summer and winter there . It will be fine though I am sure .

Honeybee,

Where is BA. You may have mentioned it somewhere. Too bad it isn't close to Tahlequah. I love thrift stores. I notice that Muskogee has a lot of them. That made me happy.

Enjoy your new home.

[quote=vegasokie;353707]I was born in a small OK town. The positive was I had some of the best teachers in the world. The negative about OK is STATE INCOME TAX, inheritance and gift tax. I left at first because of better job opportunities out of state and now I cannot afford to move back because we would lose over $10,000 a year due to state tax on pensions, monies not made in OK. I wish they would change their taxation laws because I love so many wonderful folks back there. The 6 states that have no state income tax were the main ones increasing in population, according to the last stats I saw.
Is Ok state income tax really as high as you say?? How can retirees move to Oklahoma and live decently???

You have to look at the big picture though. We have no state income tax here in Texas but property taxes more than make up for that; they are high. However, if you are retired here in Texas you may be able to get a property tax freeze, I'm not sure. You have to look at the overall cost of living, and I think Oklahoma has one of the lowest costs of living in the country. Good luck, and do your research. There are cost of living calculators on the Internet that can really help you out. Just do a google search. Good luck.

There is a list of all the states who don't charge state income tax on the forum and it was posted by Sunrico in Fla. I had remembered a few, but he posted the entire list. I know that Texas, Wyoming, South Dakota, Alaska, Tennessee, and Florida have no state income tax. But like Synopsis said, often there are other taxes that offset the different tax structures in states. It's unfortunate, but taxes just get us one way or another.

I am pretty sure Texas does not do a freeze on property taxes when you are 65 plus, I know Ar does. I could be wrong, but that is my impression. We are trying to find all this out just like so many others.

I am too tired to read this thread, but want to say that OK has a tax freeze when you reach 65, if that hasn't been said.

Jesseka, isn't that a tax freeze on property taxes, but not income taxes or any other as we have been told. We intend on writing to the state to clarify what taxes seniors pay as well as the medical insurance benifits available. I don't know for sure I am right, but think so. If this is the case all this means is, your property tax can not increase. This is what AR offers anywary.

Yes, a tax freeze on the house taxes.
