I like the idea of buying locally, but it's not always possible, or close to affordable. In my case, for instance, I got my cell phone on ebay at less than 1/4 the price of a new one - but it had a defective battery. I contacted the seller because they guaranteed their phones, and got a new battery for free. The second one worked but doesn't hold a charge for long. I called the local authorized dealer to find out how much they sold new batteries for - a new battery was 39.95. I checked on line and found a dealer who sells OEM batteries and accessories, and got one for 1.99, plus a couple dollars shipping. If I'd bought locally, I'd have had to find a neighbor to drive me into town [a 45 mile round trip], I'd have had to pay for the gas [at least 20.00], and probably buy lunch [25.00-30.00]. I'm not complaining about the gas or lunch, it's a fairly cheap price to pay for an outing which I'd enjoy, but that would have been one very expensive battery! I'm not fond of WallyWorld, but I've gone a few times in the past 5 years when someone offers to take me along. It's usually a bust, because whatever it is that I've had on my list of things to get, they don't have. The one exception was a TV, and that was 3 years ago. Since the alternative would have been one of the chain electronic stores, I don't see that it made much difference where I got it.
