I think anyone who is considering a move to OK should go there first to get a look-see. Also be informed, mkfarnam, there ARE illegals in OK too.

Culture shock is the mild way of saying the transition from California lifestyle to OK is mind-boggling. There are more than 30 tribes settled in Oklahoma (closer to 37 or 47?), so there is a good mix of cultures. Hope you are not prejudiced. Also, Duncan is close to Lawton which is where Fort Silly is located. Whatever you do, don't get busted in Comanche County. I am serious. Not even for green leafy.

And if you get tired of working for your current job, you can always work at the private prison outside of Lawton, Wackenhut, or the The Whack as it is known. Or maybe not.

We get a lot of people in prison from Duncan, mainly from meth activity. Its not all meth, there are a lot of good people in Duncan, its just one of the activities that youngsters turn to out of boredom.

I hope you will be happy there.

I am well aware of that.
But compared to the Illegal population in So, California, that in it`s self would be a "Culture shock", and a possitive one at that.
Just because I`m against "Illegal" Immigration in no way means that I am prejudiced. The key word "Illegal".
I have a 25 year in my Profession so I doubt I will need to apply for the Green Mile. LOL.
There` a large security business out here called: "Wackenhut".

Are Rodeos still a big event back there? or are they fading away through the generations?

Thanks for the information.

I wasn't implying you were prejudiced. I just wanted to address your posts on wanting to get away from illegals. I was born and raised in SE Los Angeles. So I also know first hand the huge wave of immigration.

Another reason I love Oklahoma so much is it fills my heart to be amongst my own Native Peoples. We have plenty of both pow wows and rodeos here. There are more horses per capita in Oklahoma than any other state. We often go to the appaloosa shows in the city. A very close friend of ours has prize bulls. Everything here is so different than the constant buzz of L.A. Most of the Indian people I grew up with in L.A. have moved back to Oklahoma.

I do want you to get the full picture before moving though. And I don't mean that negatively. My family used to spend every summer with my grandparents who lived far in the country by the Wichita mountains. It is unique and although ugly and gray to others, it is unique and beautiful to us.

I Know you were`nt.
It was`nt meant to sound as if you were. I`m sorry if it did.
I was just reassuring you that prejudism is not of my liking.

Besides, I don`t get offended that easy,
Seriously, I don`t take offence to much of anything.

I`m no city slicker, I`m not a native of California. I`ve live in Ca, 35 years, but I was born and raised on a Dairy Farm in Michigan.
I`m country clear through and proud of it. I miss the farm lands.
If your from L.A. then you know that Norco and Chino are about the only main(cattle/Rodeo) farm regions in So Cal.

Thank you for writing my thoughts on illegals. I don't think people in some states really understand how we are losing our freedom just to accommodate illegal immigrants. The situation is basically okay with many people, as long as it's "not in my back yard". And I agree..We are not the ones who are racists.

Default Sallisaw

I agree about the illegal problem 100%! Too bad no other state gave a hoot about what was happening in Cali until it became a problem in thier state! Come on how could they think they would only stay in Cali? Oh well I want to know about Sallisaw area. I have a sister who lives near there but I would like others opinions about the area. Thanks in advance for any info

I wish they would change their taxation laws because I love so many wonderful folks back there. The 6 states that have no state income tax were the main ones increasing in population, according to the last stats I saw. You sound like wonderful parents. Raise your kids with a horse and they will prosper
you are lucky because NV depends on the revenues from gambling to help support the state, in many states, like Tx with no state income tax the property taxes are so high you almost can't afford to own a home. No matter what, it all works out somewhat the same. In our research, Ok has an overall low cost of living. Everyone has to decide which taxes affect them. For us, being in a little lower income level we don't care about state income tax as much as property tax and sales tax. NMnita

you don't think these things affect everyone today. You talk about illegals, please visit Ca, AZ, NM, TX, Ill, etc. Then tell us about them. Live somewhere which requires all high school kids to learn the Pledge of Allegance in 2 langauges, do I need to go further? How bout going to a store where no one speaks English> I do not want to come across as a racist, that I am not. We have zillions of friends here who are hispanic, they are more upset about the problems than we are. As for meth, again, it doesn't make any difference where you live, there will be some, but, from what I have been able to learn and that certainly isn't much, OK and Ar are nothing compared to many other states.

We are originally from Calif, then lived in the DC area for 8 years. From there we moved to Dallas and NM. Every move has been a culture shock to some degree. of course before moving a visit or 2 or 3 in necesary, but more Americans are looking for the slower life, whether raising kids or retired. I just hope the middle part of our country doesn't become to popular. NMNita
