I love Pawhuska. That is one of the areas I looked in for land when we bought here. If I were wanting to set up a creative retail operation (art gallery, coffee roaster, etc), that is one of the few areas I would consider.

Plenty to live on
You can live like a KING on $2500/month in any of the towns you listed. AND, although you'll always be considered "new" because you weren't born there, the people are amazing! There really are places where people help each other with ANYTHING their neighbors may need. Those places are right here in Oklahoma!

I saw the entering Arizona sign about two months ago. Except for a visit for the holidays I have no need to go back. Someday I'll stop gaucking at all the trees and green and stop thinking wow lol

The day before we left I dropped my nice digital camera on a tile floor. Alas shockproof does not include tile. So all the pics I took of the trip are on my cell which apparently needs its own unique cord to transfer it to the pc or I could show you the last view of cali.
With my new and spiffier digital camera I can take as many pics as I have the batteries for. There are a few of people. There are trees, more trees, sunsets, sunrises, the moon, clouds, storm clouds and the ones I got of lightning the other day peaking out of the back door trying not to get the camera wet.
Oh yeah, lots of them of my cat and dog.
Did I mention I am sooo happy here?

UPDATE: I was the original poster to this thread. I did move to Oklahoma 1 year ago today. I bought a 3 bedroom, 2 bath house on a 1/3 acre in a very small town, between Pawhuska and Ponca City. I now have 2 dogs and several cats. I have done some temp. jobs at 3 different companies to supplement my income. I consider myself extremely blessed that I sold my California home literally right before the crash. Though I am not earning what I anticipated in interest and bond income, I have been able to work part time and not touch my principal. The first winter was a real adjustment.
I do miss about 10 of my close friends in California, but 7 have come out and stayed with me, anywhere from 3 days to two weeks, and 2 are seriously considering moving, though closer to the Tulsa area. I am adjusting to small town life. No 24 hour markets, no pizza or cafe delivery at all hours, interesting weather patterns, etc.
No regrets. Thanks for all your advice!

The clean air in comparison to California smog make a big difference doesn't it?
That's one of the first things I noticed, plus the lack of illegal immigrants.due to Oklahomas immigration law HR1804.

I moved here from socal a year and a quarter ago and already love it here. I really wanted to go out to be with family over thanksgiving but it wasn't in the cards this year, but spent the day with a friend and a mutual friend who may be moving here too. What is it they say, there is family you pick?
I don't really miss having all those stores close by, and online can replace a lot of what I need anyway. They can't compete with the nice open space and trees and neighbors you actually know.
Interesting weather... good way to describe it. The most surprising thing has to be the snow in march/April. One thing I didn't need to get used to was the wind, having lived in the center of the santa ana wind tunnel. Several family members have decided to move from California though not to here so soon there may not be any reason to go back to the warm holidays in a few years.
