Take a ride on the Durango Silverton Railway in S. W. Colorado. Then drop over to Gunnison and see the Black Canyon of the Gunnisons along the Gunnison River. Visit N. E. Arizona bbetween Blanding Utah and Tuba City. Your experience will be richly rewarding. Visit the Grand Canyon. Visit Flagstaff. Visit Wilcox, San Simon, and the Texas Canyon..., they're all in Arizona. In New Mexico visit Alamagordo's New Mexico State University and walk along the mall on campus, notice the huge mural on the wall of one of those buildings showing how bad it was under the Spanish Conquistadors. The mural will make you want to cry. Many places in the mountains near Alamagordo are very nice to visit too! Then drop over to Roswell and visit the campus of Eastern New Mexico University. Its inside of the old Air Force Base near White Sands. Visit White Sands too. Then go to Carlsbad or Hobbs. See the Carlsbad Caverns. Stop in just east of Roswell at Tatum. Tatum has a wonderful steak house with an all you can eat salad bar, which I really enjoyed when I was there! New Mexico has so many places. Too many to list here. With Texas, I found that the deeper into Texas I went, the more I discovered the heart and soul of Texas. I'm sure the list goes on, too long for me to write about. I prefer the Southwest as a place to live, maybe you'll like it there, maybe not, it all depends. Each choice is personal and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There are places in Kentucky I also like, even though my experience there is limited by only a brief visit to Lexington. I understand that there are many covered bridges in Kentucky that are also very bbeautiful. Minnesota and Wisconsin I'm partial to because I spent a lot of time there in Minnesota.., from the Lake of the Woods and Black Duck, the Mesabi Iron Range, Morehead, Bemiji, the Twin Cities, Rochester, and on to the Iowa State Line. Western Wisconsin.., from Superior to Soldiers Grove. I understand also that upper N. Y. State and on into New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine are also very beautiful, especially in the Fall, with their ever changing colors, rustic red, crimson yellow, gorgeous green, and long winding dirt and gravel roads that take one back in time. When I visited Alaska, I flew into Anchorage from Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines. It was absolutely gorgeous there too! I just wished I could have spent more time in Alaska instead of California. Please don't let this stop here. Please add to this list. Last edited by in_the_gloaming; 04-11-2008 at 04:39 PM. That leaves more of Oklahoma for the rest of us! Stillwater or Blackwell are nice too! And, they are cities in Oklahoma. I guess that the meh was done with a couple of fingers pointed downward. I'd guess it all depends on where one is from, family, their history, etc. Last edited by in_the_gloaming; 04-11-2008 at 04:53 PM. Reason: addt'l info. |

I know this thread is really old, but I was just puttering around and found a reference to Tishomingo (where I live) and read the entire thread.
There are only a couple of things I don't like... um, okay, DETEST... about Oklahoma - tornadoes and the unremittingly horrid Summer weather. When you get sick simply by being outside, nothing is pretty. I have a medical condition which means that heat and humidity is dangerous for me so I'm stuck inside for 5 months of the year (May through September). However, even having said that, SE OK is really a very beautiful area, and the sunsets can be spectacular. I'm moving to North Dakota in a couple of months, and I simply can't wait. I am a cold weather person, and I've been stuck here (in OK) for 6 years. Sometimes "just leave where you're not happy" is simply not possible for a while. I don't know why I felt I needed to post this, but... ![]() Bottom line: If you don't mind heat and humidity, like pretty scenery, enjoy the "small town mentality" that permeates most of the state, then you should be in 'Heaven on earth." |

I am sure that you will get the relief you're looking for in North Dakota. The temps and humidity will be much kinder to you (especially if you like the cold) and from what I understand the people up there are pretty darn nice as well. Good luck!

Actually, it's the SOUTH Dakota people that are friendly, Synopsis.
![]() Startingover, I totally understand how you feel concerning the weather. I'm actually the opposite of you in that I can't stand the cold. I've never really liked it, but because of a few medical problems, it just makes me miserable. People will often say, "Well, just put more clothes on." I just kindly smile, but somehow that advice doesn't fix my aches and pains. It's really hard for others to understand when a climate actually makes you sick.We were on vacation a couple years ago and I had terrible allergies there. (And I don't have an allergy problem) I was so sick that I spent the last day of my vacation in bed. The area was nice and the people were friendly, but I just can't get myself to want to go back there. Who wants to spend their vacation lying in their motel room taking tons of Benadryl?
