Default Help on Ft. Gibson area

Anyone out there familiar with Ft. Gibson? Any comments regarding any subject will be appreciated. We are considering renovating 2 older homes that have some historical value. Town is about 4500 from what I see, and crime rate per city-data looks low. Don't know if there is an influx of Hispanics or any other race. The population looks balanced with a decent mix of races so hopefully everyone gets along pretty well. Thanks for any help.

I think Ft. Gibson is adorable. Have you been there? The town has maybe 4 blocks of historic district, but what I like is the airy feeling to the town. I can't explain that, just that it isn't cram packed with urban sprawl. There is no influx of hispanics that I could tell.

Ft. Gibson has some of the best schools, period. Due to that, taxes are higher than in surrounding towns. If you leave Ft. Gibson via HWY 80, going north, about five miles out of town you will come to the Grand River Dam, a very scenic area. HWY 80 makes a switchback just before the dam. Just a few miles up that road you will come to Lake Ft. Gibson and some nice housing developments on the water. If you stay on HWY 80, and go left at the old Norwood Baptist Church and drive thru the hills and curves, 53 to be exact, you can see wild turkey, deer, and eventually come to the Wildwood Campground. It's a very quiet, private, and B-eautiful park that is manned 24/7. There are about 40 campsites there, nice bath-houses, etc. I love the area and lived on the lake for about 3 years. The worst thing about Ft. Gibson, and all of rural Oklahoma, is the poverty. Jobs are limited, salaries are horrible, and it's just difficult for the area residents to make a decent living. As a result, there are methamphetamine labs and drugs are a big problem, not just in the schools, but in the adult population in general. Muskogee has some industry, but avoid the hospital there, at all cost. Also, Muskogee is known to have the worst crime around. Tahlequah, to the east, has an excellent hospital that actually has a fantastic heart center and is developing a nice women's pavillion. Believe it or not, that hospital ranks highest in the State from an accreditation standpoint. (JCAHO) One of the larger universities in the state, Northeastern State, is there, so Tahlequah is definitely a college town. Tahlequah is rich in Native American history as well, as it is the capital of the Cherokee Nation. Lake Tenkiller is just south and used to be one of the clearest lakes in Oklahoma. The Illinois River isn't far and there are canoes for rent all along the river. Folks come from everywhere to go canoeing. Very scenic area with much to do if you like water sports. Just watch out for the TICKS and CHIGGERS, from sping thru the summer. After the first frost, not so bad, but take some Deep Woods OFF along and use it frequently. The low-income people, lack of good jobs, and drugs don't bother me nearly as much as the BUGS!!! Mosquitos look like small birds there!!!! At night, you can't tell if the mosquitos are fireflies or mosquitos with landing lights. They can almost ruin a very good time.

Not at the moment but give me a couple of days, no telling what I can come up with.

Fort Gibson's economy is not the best right now but we keep on trying. We have alot of folks buying up all the available land that they can get their hands on, making our housing costs cheaper (for now) than larger cities. Housing additions are going up everywhere with lots starting at $60K. We even have a $1.5 million dollar house right down the road here. People that work in bigger cities seem to want to move here for our solitude and schools. But if you are driving anywhere near Fort Gibson on Highway 62 east or west during 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., watch out! That's morning rush hour and most all of the traffic from Fort Gibson leaves town for other destinations. Evening rush hour looks like it lasts longer because you can't really tell whether people are coming home from work or driving to the casino. (LOL)

So, I guess a lot of people work in Tulsa and Muskogee and live in Fort Gibson, or want to. Lots for 60K sound expensive to me, so you must have good schools there.

I don't think that Ft. Gibson can be captured in photos. The town, while small, is spred out and has a country feel to it. I hope Tiger can come up with some.

Hi all, I'm new here and not exactly sure how to do the cut and paste thing, but I wanted to ask about the comment above that was made regarding (i'm assuming) Muskogee Regional Medical Center. I'm considering a position in that hospital and I was wondering what the writer meant by "avoid the hospital there, at all cost". I currently live in Fl. and I'm very excited about a new start in your beautiful state. Any info or opinions anyone can give me on that hospital would be greatly appreciated. Also, I've been trying to check out apts. and my searches keep coming up with "no results". The closest ones I'm finding are in Tulsa and 30-40 minutes away from Muskogee. I thought for sure Fort Gibson would have some, but none are showing up. Any comments about the best place to look for nice, safe apartments that are within a 10 or 15 minute drive to to Muskogee? Thanks!

Robin
