Just thought I'd mention it to any hughes county locals who have horses. Today, in broad daylight, with me being home, a dark tan van type vehicle pulling a green and white horse trailer came thru my closed, chained gate and tried to steal a foal. I wouldn't have know had a guest not walked out and saw them in the process. They already had the rope around her neck and was trying to get her into the trailer when we saw them. Of course, they jumped back into their vehicle before we could get to them, and sped away. We called the sheriff and filed a police report. Have a pretty good description. Dang these people got guts! Horse thieves......hang 'em!

I'm glad they didn't make off with your foal. That takes balls to do that in daylight. In an economy where people are giving away horses why try to steal them?

Hi blackbear. Sure does take alot of guts or stupidity. My mom just told me a few minutes ago that she read in the paper where several had been stolen in Hughes County just recently.

Hope they aren't stealing them for the slaughter market.

As I recall, slaughter of horses in the US is illegal. Also, a foal would not be the target of a "price per pound" horse theft ring. I find it amazing that anyone would consider stealing a horse like that. Non-bloodline horses are pretty common and cheap. Bloodline horses.....ones that are worth a lot of money........are genetically traceable........and a quality horse showing up in competition in a couple of years can easily be DNA tested......at which time the theft can be discovered.

Sounds more like really stupid people not thinking things through.........................

Not sure why they did it. I think maybe they knew if they could get the foal loaded, that the mare might follow into the trailer. The mare is beautiful and foal looks just like her with almost the same markings. They were driving a dark tan van type vehicle (not sure but think it was a Ford) and had a green and white trailer. Two men, one dark skin tone and one light skin tone. But I have hundreds of photos of these horses and their markings so it would have been hard for them to hide them. Everyone is watching for them now. All the area service stations/stores have been contacted and given the description along with the sheriff's dept. Also our neighbors and surrounding folk. If they come back here, they're gonna be looking down the barrel of a 22.

But it's quite legal in Mexico. Horses are being sold there legally for slaughter. Big problem with Mexico is that they sever their spinal cord and butcher them alive. The meat is supposedly better that way. There is also a black market for horse meat in the U.S. and horses in Florida were getting butchered right in their own stalls in Florida a year or two ago.

My gawd...I live in Hughes County too. Somebody probably wanted a horse so they went to steal it for them for a price. If I see that vehicle i will let you know the tag number or somethin. If they are from my area...I would probably know who they were.
Speaking of horses, I love horses. Do you sell any? I wanted a Tennessee Walker for a long time, but never could find one...I could afford. Others were too far away to go check on.

Thanks so much-I would sure appreciate it! I am sooo curious to know who it was (and still very angry). We don't sell horses. We only have 4. Actually we are kinda thinkin' about finding a good home for one but haven't made up our mind for sure yet. She's a beautiful sorrel and white paint but she's a wild child!! She is a rescue and I guess she's never even had a halter on (boy has she not ever had one on..talk about a rodeo...LoL!) and she's a little to eager to try and kick us. But she's starting to come around. Thanks again and would appreciate any info if you see a vehicle that fits our description.
