I would love to be able to be self-sufficient, and hopefully one day to have a veggie garden that works.

I buy a lot of my clothes at used stores and garage sales. But I also spent a lot at other places, like furniture stores and L.L. Bean, but only for items you can't get at used stores, that is, when it comes to L.L. Bean. So they don't get much out of me. Shoes I always buy new as with undergarments.
I did live in a couple of sorts, back in the late 60s early 70s, but they were urban. And you do definitely get to know some people a whole lot better than you'd like to!

The original intentional communities were really communes, like Oneida, Amana, and the Shakers. They weren't necessarily religious, but most were. Then in the 70s, someone bright in real estate came up with a new twist: communities of golfers, horse people, and so on. Eventually the new 'intentional communities' turned into gated communities. I never cared much for the idea because I enjoy diversity. Life is so much more interesting when the people you know are interested in different things and share their interests with you.

I've always like the self-sufficiency thing. I've almost never lived any place where it was possible to have a garden, so that's something I'm looking forward to. I did learn a lot about using native plants in a variety of ways, and I did most of my cooking from scratch, though these days I also get plenty of store bought, too. I'm also trying like mad to use up everything I have in the freezer before it's time to leave here. And I could never stand to see people just throw away perfectly good whatevers just because it was last year's style! My kids grew up wearing either home made or thrift shop things - now they make their own choices. My daughter is a junk-a-holic, she's worse than I am about seeing something interesting in a thrift shop and getting it. My son buys new, but probably 95% of what he needs is working gear since he's a commercial fisherman - and even if he wasn't, he's big enough so that he'd never be able to find anything to fit him in a second hand store of any kind.

i did the same thing for my clothes as well as my kids clothes when they were growing up. it was one of the savings that helped keep me at home when they were little. one day an acquaintance chastised me for buying "used" clothes for my kids. i invited her to go through their drawers and closets and pick out for me the ones that were bought "used" and the ones they received "new" as gifts. obviously once clothes are washed there's no way to tell. i don't think i changed her mind, but she didn't bring it up ever again.

I should have one of those bumper stickers, "I brake for garage sales."

Especially in the early years when kids grow so fast, the used clothes are such a savings, not to mention all the baby equipment you need.

When my daughter was in high school, it was a fad to buy t-shirts at thrift shops. Old sport team t-shirts, restaurant t-shirts, and oh the family reunion t-shirts were the real prizes.

Maybe a little longer than that. They become more frequent about March and are common in the first part of November. Of course, you can usually find at least one or two most any time of year. The estate sales are good too, and are held pretty much year round, except holidays.

Just found this cool link from the Daily Oklahoman: Garage Sales Map

that's good, because we're leaving a lot of old furniture here, so we will need to replace stuff when we get there in march. i almost NEVER buy new furniture, you can get really good stuff at low prices if it's second hand. so many people pay lots of money for new furniture, and then sell it really cheap because they get divorced, or have to move into a smaller house (probably because they're making new furniture payments all the time). we bought this great 9 foot sleeper couch for $40 at a garage sale a couple of years ago. we'll get it recovered after we move, and viola! new couch!

I learned from one of the real experts: my mom. She knew all the ins and outs of garage saleing. One of us always had to get up before the crack of dawn and go with her, to carry the heavy stuff.

Ok!! You should be nicely settled in by July right? Mark your Calendar (tentatively) for July 19th...unless they change the date that will be the weekend for "The World's Largest Garage Sale and Summer Fest" here in Duncan.

Barring any unforeseen disasters (like my car breaking down. ) we will come get you and go Yard-Saling all day! We went around town last year and it was a blast. The whole town pretty much shuts down for one giant town-wide Yard-Sale!
