She may be fair-skinned and blue-eyed, but she has the heart of a Native. And I am not going to pass judgment on people I don't know. I think if you met her, you would definitely NOT be calling her a twink! You would get an earfull if you did. She makes Sister Schousse look like a girl scout selling cookies door to door! Before Dances With Wolves, people who were of mixed blood did not mention it. It was not "cool" to be NDN in the old days. Who knows how many people of Cherokee lineage there are today who don't even know it or who could care less. When I worked for the citizen Pottawatomie in Shawnee, OK, they had a pow-wow which they turned into a gathering for tribal members only. They had people come from all over the US to attend the gathering/reunion and to look at them, you would not know any of them were Indian. The tribe also invites the Bands/Clans from the Great Lakes region and KS. So, it is good people, although fair-skinned, are teaching their children the beauty of their Native heritage. |

I don't hold it against anyone who is a LIGITIMATE ndn for having fair skin or lighter hair. Of course there are black and white people in this country that may have a ndn ancestor but does that make them ndn? No it doesn't. All it does is make them have ndn ancestry. I have a very minute amount of french blood. My great great great grandfather was French. Do you think I can go to France and say hello my people, can I be a french citizen? They would laugh at me. The french blood has been watered down by my ndn blood. There is a shirt that says "I'm part white but I can't proove it" is the perfect example. I don't know nothing about the french culture. I was raised in my native culture and appreciate other native cultures. I just can't stand these wannabees who exploit our culture. Its disrespectful. If none of the three federally recognized Cherokees acknowlege the northern band, that should tell you something. How would you react if you found out there was a lost northern Kiowa band in Kentucky? Check out this site. If that makes you roll your eyes for me to say she has the heart and soul of Indian, and we call her sister, than so be it. Like I said, you would not be talking smack if she were in front of you. You can use the Northern Cherokee as an example of wannabes, but there are individuals within that group that you simply don't know. As for as looks go, my cousin's mother is (full) Cherokee and his father was white. But his mother remarried to a Kiowa when he was small child, and even though he is pure anglo on the outside, no one takes up the Red Road stronger than he does. So, is he a wanna-be? Not to us he isn't. He knows he looks different from the rest of us, but we love him as our brother and blood quantum does not lessen our acceptance of him. There are many examples of people from mixed blood or non-Indian heritage who are fully accepted by Indian people. Especially in the old days, before CDIB cards. This thread is for celebrating Native Peoples and cultures. Thank you for posting your feelings on the Northern Cherokee. Whether they are real or wannabe, makes no difference to me. I am not here to pronounce judgment on people I don't know. |

Halito keencat, If you go back to the FIRST post in this thread you will see what it was intended to be:

Since this thread is for sharing one's heritage let me point out what I have learned from YOUR words here... I have learned that the Chalaki people do not consider themselves "LEGITIMATE" unless they are recognized by the State or Federal (White Man's) Govt. I have also learned that the Chalaki people like to pass judgement and throw racial epithets at people they have never met, and know nothing about. Is this truly what you wished to share? If so then, Yakoke for that knowledge... Obviously I need to re-think some of my feelings towards your people. Our friend Redbird has tried gently (and unsuccessfully) to explain the purpose of THIS thread to you... We all have varying degrees of anger and bitterness over many things. I COULD come in here, pound my chest, pull my hair and wail over the actions of our California (Chukchansi) Elders but I will NOT. They chose Govt. and $$ over Blood ... As we see it, their wallets may be full but their hearts will always be empty. So please, share your people's heritage with us if you choose but leave the angry judgements for another thread. Chi pisa la chike... ![]() (To RB) In the words of my Husband's people... Redbird chi chunkash chompoli...Chi hullo li. But you knew that already. ![]() |

![]() . There are some that may perceive what you said as making a judgement. I wouldn't say your judging. It seems you know all too well about the wannabes. My intentions were not to judge your friend. Not once did I call her fake or say she is not native. I was speaking in regards to the so called northern cherokee band. Quote:

I think some people are so far removed from Indian country, they don't realize the struggles that went on to survive. There were Indian Wars, Indian Removal, then forced Assimilation via Boarding Schools, etc. All within 100 years. I find it hard to believe anyone would want to come to Indian Country just to take what they can get and not even really care about the beauty of the culture that still exists. Quote:
Maybe some new faces came into the group and changed its direction. Who knows. Anyway, back on topic. Here is a short clip of Charlie Hill. He is hilarious. I saw him up north I think in Boulder. YouTube - Charlie Hill Genericee!! That was too funny. |
