Tony was a soft spoken, generous man. I met him when I was on the Taos County Arts Council a number of years ago and we hosted him at the DH Lawrence Ranch at a writers symposium. One of the highlights was a discussion on the Navajo by him and RC Gorman (RC Gorman is a well known Navajo artist living in the Taos area). I think he understood many of the Navajo ways because the sense of harmony was at the core of his being as well. His friends will miss him for his generousity and calm presence. The world will miss him for his insight into a way of life that is alien to many but appealing to all of us. His passing is a loss for all of us..........

That was great, GP.

I had no idea Tony Hillerman graduated from Konowa High School. And being from Sacred Heart is way cool.

In case most folks here on CDF don't know, Sacred Heart was a Catholic missionary school set up around 1877. It became one of the first Indian boarding schools in Indian Territory. It later burned down in 1901 except for these few buildings.

"The bakery and the two-story log cabin are the only buildings that remain today."

No wonder Hillerman fit in so well with the Dine' in NM, he was raised around Native Americans in rural Oklahoma.

SPIRIT stands for the Society to Preserve Indigenous Rights and Indigenous Traditions. We came together following the event held at the Oklahoma State Capitol last November 16th, 2007.

We are currently in the process of organizing an event to demonstrate that we Indians are still here. "Red Heart, Red Land, Red People" is being held at the Oklahoma State Capitol Park on November 15th beginning at 10:00 am. The purpose of this event is to celebrate not only Native American Heritage Month or Day but to bring our people together in a positive manner. We want to give our people a reason to be proud of who they are every day. We also want to educate the community, the public, the state and our own about American Indian culture, traditions, history and issues.

We are seeking organizations of all types, tribal entities, tribal nations, and Indian owned businesses to sponsor and/or set up a booth or table on November 15th at "Red Heart, Red Land, Red People". By doing so, not only will you be supporting a grassroots effort to keep our people strong, you will be mentioned in SPIRIT's promotional materials of this event beginning now. Donations and sponsorships are greatly needed and all are appreciated.

Contact me by PM or at musccreekgrl@msn.com to reserve your table and/or talk about how you can help make this event one for all Oklahomans to enjoy and remember.

We need all of you to make it happen. SPIRIT is hopeful that all of you will attend our celebration on November 15th at the South State Capitol Park.
