You just don't find many stories like this in California anymore.

But I've been reading the news from Oklahoma online for quite a while now, and this kind of thing is utterly commonplace. Seems there's a story or two every week like this one (intruder is killed, injured, run-off, or hog-tied by homeowner), and nobody bats an eye. Love it.

This is especially pertinent, from the article:

Quote:
"The problem with burglary is almost always, if you continue doing burglaries, you're either going to end up harming someone or someone's going to end up harming you. That's already happened to Mr. Watts," said Tulsa Police Detective JB Bennett.
Quite right.

I don't rejoice when a person is injured or killed with a gun or by any other means (and I am a supporter of gun ownership rights) but hey--you gotta protect you and yours. I don't think I'd track down and kill someone who burglarized my home and got away with any of my "stuff" but walking in on someone who's invaded your home is another matter.

I have a wife and two daughters. I find an intruder in my home I'm gonna draw down, shoot first (if necessary) and ask questions later.

You got no idea if that person is armed, mentally ill, hopped up on meth, what their intentions are, or anything else.

PS-- I used to gripe about living in Oklahoma and put a good deal of time and energy figuring a way to "get out." I have left the state many times over the years. Most recently living in three different states for 8 years before returning "home" last Thanksgiving. Probably for good.

Now I find all kinds of things to like about the state.

Sometimes one has to leave for a while to appreciate what he's got back home. Distance can help get a new perspective.

I expect the same would be true for me should I ever leave California. That worries me a little ...
