There is no such thing as "southwestern" culture unless you are referring livestock. NM is not like Arizona and Arizona is not like southwest Texas. Neither are anything like Nevada or Colorado.

Most of Oklahoma is situated in the eastern tier of the United States.

Calling anywhere outside the panhandle "southwestern" is pretty silly IMO.

Besides. Go into southeastern Oklahoma and tell them they are "southwestern ranchers." If you call them midwesterners, they will run you out of town.

Oklahoma is a southern state with a predominantly southern culture.

We may have some phantom pollsters bumping up the "Midwest" option. I think it went from about 2 or 3 to 6 overnight.

Maybe some of our disgruntled California visitors, no?

Either way it's been overwhelmingly either the South or Southwest duking it out for top spot.

I saw that. It seems like there is always those people who desperately want to hide Oklahoma's southern identity.

After living in Louisiana for most of my life, then moving to Tishomingo, I tend to agree with the Census regions. I would say it is southern.

Far reaches of Western Oklahoma has more of the ranching and cattle culture which is southwestern in nature.

Northwestern Oklahoma is similar to Kansas in many ways and historically was settled by Kansans and other northern plains types in the Cherokee strip run.

While the whole state has some southern influence as you deftly described, the state and it's people change subtly as you go across the state, particulary from southeast to northwest.
After reading this post, I would say you have never set foot in south eastern Oklahoma.

Truth. I enjoy visiting "Tish" when I'm over that way.

What does that minor part of the state have to do with the state as a whole? Very little.

Coming from an outsider, I have done extensive research on Oklahoma and browsed numerous topics on it. I would not consider it South/Southwest/or Midwest. When I think of the Midwest, I think of Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois. ect. When I think of the South, I think of Arkansas, Louisiana, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, The Carolina's, Florida, Georgia, ect. When I think of the Southwest, I think of Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, ect. (I put Cali in a different category).

I would consider Oklahoma in the Southern Plains or in a category by its self.

Sincerely,

A Florida resident born in Ohio.

Absolutely. Good to see a true Midwesterner set the record straight. Well done.
