We have a Pikes Pass. It's very convenient. You can apply for one at certain Tag Agencies. You pay $40 to open the account, and you can "reload" online when it runs low. We have it in the truck, but it can be removed to use in other cars, as long as those cars are registered for the pass.

Default Generator question

We're thinking of getting a portable generator for our house. I know absolutely nothing about them. Can anyone who has one tell me what kind I should be looking for, and how much I can expect to pay? I would want something to back up our electricity in case of storms, etc.

It depends on what you want it to back up. Freezer, fridge, stove? People used them a lot up north and in WA as well. But the more you want it to run, the more it's going to cost, and the more it runs, the more gas it's going to use. My neighbors in WA had one to back up the fridge and freezer, and usually they could run the TV too, but the TV had to be turned off to make a pot of coffee. You'll be lucky if it's not 4 figures. Hondas are fairly popular and relatively inexpensive - but there are a lot of brands out there. There are a lot of discussions about generators on the AK forum, if you want to go there and do a search.

Questions:
Do you want it to run off:

Natural gas
Propane
Diesel
or
Gasoline

NOTE: if it's for emergencies only, I wouldn't recommend "gaoline operated"

Thanks for the tips, MK and Karibear. I would want it for emergencies, power outages, to keep the refrigerators and lights working. So for those purposes, do you think a 3000kw-5000kw (Honda) Portable would work?

Yes I would. "Honda EM5000is" is designed for home back up. They're quiet and reliable. The only generator made with 220V power.
Honda em5000is Inverter Portable Generator - Generators
I'll see who sells them in your area and how much.
