I see countless posts on the Oklahoma forum from people moving here that are concerned about tornadoes here. Let me set the facts straight. I've lived here all my 17 years and have not once seen a tornado. Although, I'd love to go chasing sometime, despite how dangerous they say it is.
The chances of your house getting hit by a tornado are about as high as hitting the lottery. The tv stations have some of the most sophisticated radars of anywhere in the country. We have crews in the field monitoring the conditions and warnings are issued well in advance of any impending tornadoes. Storms sirens will go off if a tornado is probably within 10 miles of your area. Your chances of being unaware of a tornado here are very low, considering most people will be outside looking for it in the sky. I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't let tornadoes scare you from moving to Oklahoma. They are just a part of life here and we just learn to live our lives without fear. Even on the worst of severe weather days I go about my daily business and turn on the tv every few hours just to make sure. |

Hi Nameless,
YES.... SSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Trust colleen, you REALLY DON'T want a bunch of North Easterners there... If they were so great, do you think we'd be going to OK? (No offense to NE'ers... I've known about 20 really nice ones.... In 43 years!) ![]() M. |

I tell you what, though, when those tornados hit the oil wells and all that oil gets slung all over the place (ever wonder why tornados look black?), it makes a mess that takes months to clean up. And our county commissioners make so much in kickbacks that they don't even advertise for clean up crews, let alone let the local media in on it. I've got a neighbor down the road that got hit by an oil filled twister that what he had left was so slick, he couldn't get up the drive. You ever try to catch an oil soaked pig? Can't be done. And weeks after one of those sprays that blue black stuff around we get eggs that are off colored.....they come out all blue and green......and it stays like that for months....sometimes permanently.
So, folks, if you are somewhat happy where you are, best you stay there. They need happy people too and once you find a place like that where it's safe, there aren't any oil filled twisters, and you can catch your pigs, let us know.....we'd like to come visit....maybe even stay. If I can find some of those blue or green eggs, I will post a picture of them.......nasty things we end up feeding to the dogs or pigs. |

No one in their right mind would ever move to OK! ![]() Well, maybe not alive, but anything .223 (or bigger) would make a pig reasonably easy to catch. Quote:

But still..... All you folks who aren't from OK, should heed Goodpasture's warning... He really knows what he's talking about... The really smart folk should live in NH... (Nahhh... I'm just kidding... I want to sell out of NH and go to OK too.) ![]() M. |

No Kidding. I live in Yukon and we are growing like crazy. Now, we are wanting to move to get away from it. I do make use of the 24 hour businesses though, because I'm a night owl. It's nice to go into Walgreens at 3:00 A.M. while its not crowded, but I'd trade it all for a little spot of land in the country.

Gotcha beat, hon. I lived in Oklahoma until I was 62 and didn't see a tornado until I was 58. Well, actually, I didn't see it, 'cause we were hiding in the closet.

I have seen two funnels on the ground, both were about F1. I have seen two funnel clouds go right over me. One was fairly big and did some damage in Ardmore. That was before you could get OKC channels on satellite TV. The first report of the tornado was when the local Ardmore (Channel 12) TV studio was damaged.
Having the OKC channels on satellite TV for the rural folks, and on cable TV channels in the small towns, has made a big difference in the amount of tornado warning we get. |
