Wow, Peg, how do you find time to be on CDF? I agree with Synopse, you and LadyRobyn deserve MVP most valuable poster awards.

The pics are great, and I love the scarecrows. You guys really have to work hard!!! Compared to the rest of us, city-fied folks who sit behind a pewter all day...

Do you send your pecans to Valley View east of Shawnee on HWY 9? That's where we go to get our pecans in bulk.

I bet you crack the whip on your farm too!

I second that motion... And we'd have to include YOU also...
I still laugh about the "bunny w/ pancake" pic... And your REAL OK photos also.
I especially liked the one with your acquaintance in front of the peace pipes.
(BTW... Glad you didn't have to break with tradition!)

Psssst.... You forgot to mention about those "propane cannons"...
Synopsis and I REALLY want to know about those.

I won't take any of that action... I'd bet she does too.

Oooh! I know! Pick me! LOL

They used those in the orchards out in California (near our house) they periodically make a loud BOOM to scare off the birds. But you have to move them around a lot... Crows are smart birds.

Right Peggy?

Great Pics as always!

Redbird, How sweet Thank-you! (gotta go rep a few strangers and get back to you. )

I thought you were in Duncan, OK?
Are you a former Cali lady?
(You sure don't sound like one here.)

OK.... But how do you make them "go BOOM" periodically and automatically?

I know they work on a timer, but this page on Wildlife Control would probably explain the "mechanics" better than I could.

We have been here for 3 1/2 years now...my Dad was born here and most of my Paternal ancestors were here pre-statehood. Oklahoma was in my blood LONG before we moved here, for us it was like coming *Home*.

45 years in Calif. *shudder* LOL

So far we have about 20,000 pounds. This is the biggest harvest in many years. We are hoping to get about 50,000 pounds or maybe more. These are native pecans.

You can see a propane cannon in the very first picture. The propane cannister is hooked up to the cannon. It lets out a little propane, until enough builds up, and a spark makes the propane explode with a boom like a loud rife or shotgun. I guess you could put a tennis ball in it to shoot it away, but they are just for noise.

45 YEARS!!!!!!
You SURE don't sound like a Cali girl... I NEVER would have guessed.
(That's a compliment!)
I also wouldn't have guessed you were THAT old either.
(Probably should have shut-up while I was ahead...)

Too Late... LadyRobyn hipped us to "Propane Cannons".

Thanks,

Those crows are really smart. We move the cannons around, but there are lots of pecan trees around that nobody is protecting, so it is easier for them to just go over there.

Being retired is a lot more work than you think. I am mostly chief whip-cracker, complainer, and gopher. It is fun to raise stuff, and I like raising the pecans and hay rather than the cute little animals I get all attached to.

We will take them to Shawnee or to Bristow, whichever one gives us the best price. We are really just hoping to break even. The labor costs eat you up. But, America needs pecans! It makes me feel kind of patriotic.

If I'd known how much y'all liked cannons, I would have already shown you this, one of my DH's many toys:

It can shoot a tennis ball a really long ways.

Here are the pecans as of Friday.
